Read the HILARIOUS books that inspired the HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON films! Hiccup Horrendous Haddock the Third is a smallish Viking with a longish name. Hiccup's father is chief of the Hairy Hooligan tribe which means Hiccup is the Hope and the Heir to the Hairy Hooligan throne - but most of the time Hiccup feels like a very ordinary boy, finding it hard to be a Hero. In the first How to Train Your Dragon book Hiccup must lead ten novices in their initiation into the Hairy Hooligan Tribe. They have to train their dragons or be BANISHED from the tribe FOR EVER! But what if Hiccup's dragon resembles an ickle brown bunny with wings? And has NO TEETH? The Seadragonus Giganticus Maximus is stirring and wants to devour every Viking on the Isle of Berk . . .
Can Hiccup save the tribe - and become a Hero?

I read this book to my son expecting it to be like the film. It wasn't at all and it took a little while to get used to the changes. Once I did it far exceeded my expectations and we have thoroughly enjoyed it. We have continued to read the whole collection. I would definitely recommend.

Read this as a grown up, such an adventure! I would recommend it as an "appropriate for all ages" read, easy to digest and such imagery!
This year we also watched the movies together with my six year old and loved them as much as I did the book.

I had watched the How to train your dragon film, and when i saw this book, i thought it would be the same thing just in book form. Well, i was completely wrong. It's still about Hiccup, but his dragon Toothless is miniscule, and his best friend is Fishlegs. Despite all of this, the books are still way better than the films. I couldn't stop reading it. I never put it down. This book is perfect for anyone, no matter their age.

The first instalment of the How To Train Your Dragon series. Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III is the hero of the story, which is unexpected, as he's the second worst Viking Berk has ever seen. (Although he does have quite heroic red hair and is the son of the chief, making him heir to the Hooligan throne.) The worst Viking Berk has ever seen is Fishlegs, Hiccup's best friend, as he has a limp, asthma, eczema, a squint, and is allergic to reptiles, something that is not particularly useful when your island depends on dragons. Hiccup's cousin Snotface Snotlout looks very heroic, with a small moustache and nostril hairs. He's best in the class at pretty much everything and is always helpfully reminding 'Hiccup the Useless' this. His lackey, Dogsbreath the  Duh-Brain is as wise and intelligent as a tissue box, but is as big as an elephant. He is also very heroic, as he can fart to the tune of Berk's national anthem. The book begins with Hiccup, Fishlegs and the rest of the Viking recruits standing in the freezing cold weather, outside of The Dragon Mountain. Their aim is to sneak inside The Dragon Cave and kidnap a sleeping dragon to be their pet. This could be Hiccup's chance to be respected from his peers. However, he ends up with the smallest dragon there. Even worse, ITS COMPLETELY TOOTHLESS!!! However, when Berk is surrounded by a gigantic Sea Dragon, the Seadragonus Giganticus Maximus, will Hiccup's luck finally change?

A beautiful book, with a lovely meaning in it. This book is the first of 12 books. The How to Train Your Dragon series is one of the best series ever written, and I can't emphasise how much you should read them.

I would strongly recommend reading all of the How to Train Your Dragon books in order, as each story is intertwined with another, and each provides a solid foundation for the next to build upon.

This book is fantastic and the start of an amazing series. The description is great, the characters wildly barmy - believable in a fictional way. It is a great story to read aloud and draws out voices and mannerisms turning it into a performance. The details about the tribes and the general attitude towards Hiccup are convincing, the types of dragons have led to many conversations by us and led to super pictures afterwards. Fishlegs must be the best friend to have - who wouldn't want a beserker as a best friend? The character names are fun and the print/type face are great to help reading for effect

I love this book, it's brilliant.  I love the movies and the to programmes too.
How to train your dragon is really dramatic and my favourite bit is when the children went to the dragon sin the cave.  It was really daring as the could have fallen or been eaten.
This book is great and anyone who likes the TV programmes will like it, especially junior school children like me.

This is a great book and really fires the imagination.  My daughter now thinks that she knows everything there is to know about dragons!  Her favourite character is toothless (the hero's pet dragon) because mummy (me) does such a brilliant voice for him.  It's a great book for doing voices, there are so many varied characters so it's a fun read for me and her.

I loved it because I *really*, *really*, I mean mega-ly, want to be Hiccup - having a dragon, flying about on the murderous mountains and flying over the open ocean.  My second favourite character is Camicazi because she is a great fighter.  It is a mystery book about a boy who has a pet dragon called Toothless.  Toothless is a lazy hunter dragon, he doesn't do much, he leaves it all to Hiccup! I felt very excited reading this book, there are surprises sometimes and the story is heart pounding.  There are a few illustrations by Cressida Cowell and shows a map of the Barbaric Archipelago.  I think this story would be great for children who like adventures and dramatic times.

Brilliant series of books. Humorous illustrations. Far better than the TV series and films. I have loved reading these to my son as much as he has enjoyed listening to them. We have also listened to David Tennant's audio version of the first book. His Toothless is excellent and brings another level of hilarity to the books.

Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III is a wonderful character.  If you've seen the film I still would recommend the book, the illustrations are fab, the story telling is inviting, and above all both boys and girls will love the action packed story lines!

Best how to train your book in the series . It has everything from taming a dragon all the way to battling dragons! The story flowed really well and I like the way how they included the Seadragonus Giganticus Maximus.

This is the first in the series of 12 'How to Train your Dragon' books. My friend bought this for my son as a 6th birthday present, as she knew he was a huge fan of the film and cartoon series. The book immediately draws you in with the very likeable, if unlikely, hero of Hiccup. He is the son of a Viking chief, but thinks and behaves very differently to the rest of his tribe. In this first book, Hiccup has to pass the Dragon Initiation Programme - something that he struggles with.

The book is very well written - it is engaging, funny and full of adventure and examples of friendship. My son loved it so much that he went on to read the wholet series.

I read this book after seeing Dragons Race to the Edge on TV.  My favourite bit was when the Seadragonus Giganticus Maximus exploded and now I love collecting all of the books.  This did take quite a while for me to read but it was still exciting.  I think this book would be good for anyone over 7 years old.

We read this book as a family reading time, after baths and before bed. The older children really liked the characters and learnt something from this story. The younger ones liked the excitement that builds throughout this tale. Henry plans on becoming a dragon trainer now when he grows up, interesting career choice.
