For readers who loved Wonder and The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time this extraordinary debut will make you laugh and cry.
A story that crosses time and generations, for adventure-loving readers young and old.
"My dad died twice. Once when he was thirty nine and again four years later when he was twelve."
On Al Chaudhury's twelfth birthday his beloved Grandpa Byron gives him a letter from Al's late father. In it Al receives a mission: travel back to 1984 in a secret time machine and save his father's life.
Al soon discovers that time travel requires daring and imagination. It also requires lies, theft, setting his school on fire and ignoring philosophical advice from Grandpa Byron. All without losing his pet hamster, Alan Shearer...
Time Travelling With a Hamster is a funny, heart-warming race-against-time - and across generations - adventure that you will won't be able to put down.

This is the first book that has totally and completely engrossed my 10y old daughter to the point that she proclaimed she 'felt as if she was there in the book'.  She has never said that about any book ever before, plus she immediately said she wanted to re-read it for/by herself again - never done that before either!  Very unique, mesmerising and extremely engaging - spot on in getting the balance perfect between addressing 'loss' and mixing this with humour and a real sense of affection for the characters.  Brilliant addition having a pet hamster involved too.  Cleverly written and great being set in my home town/neck of the woods (I am a Geordie) - although we weren't expecting swear words (not many, but still a bit of a shock).

This is another to add to the growing list of 'must reads' for this age group.

I can't think of a better way to explore father - son relationships than through a story about a boy who uses the love science and computing his father has imbued in him to save his own father's life by travelling back in time thereby meeting and befriending him as a boy.

So good.  So well written.  So exciting and sad, yet funny and engrossing.  I also loved the tiny chapters.  Some are less than a page long but I cannot imagine them being merged into one another.

Thank you to our friends who gave us this.  What a pleasure!

I had never read a Ross Welford and did not know what it would be like.  Lots of people recommended it and it was shortlisted for the Blue Peter Book Awards in 2017.

A synopsis...Al’s dad died twice, the first time when he was 39, another when he was 12!!!  On Al’s 12th birthday, his Grandpa Byron gave him a letter from his dad.  It included instructions on how to travel back in time to 1984 on a secret mission in a time machine. All in order to save his dad’s life, he has to tell lies and worse...whilst also trying to save his pet hamster!  The main character Al is part Geordie and lives with his mum, step dad and step sister.

I enjoyed this book because it includes a bit of science education, as well as being a beautifully written story.  It made we feel excited to see what happens next.  I highly recommend it.  If you enjoy adventure and mystery this is positively for you. I think it is best for age 10+ as it has a lot of information to process and understand.  The lovely cover is illustrated by Tom Clohosy Cole.

This book is very funny, but can get confusing at times. I would recommend to 9+ because the book is quite long. The character Al is funny. Al is the main character and he is the one traveling through time with his hamster Alan Shearer!

This book is really brilliant. My mum started reading it to me and my sister, but it was so good, I couldn't wait for them so I finished it myself!
It's very exciting. I loved the time travel and the science. My sister (7) got a bit confused by some of the science, so I would say it is good for age 9 and above. I will definitely be checking out more books by this author.

Time Travelling with a Hamster is a great book for children aged 10+.  The main character Albert it's a fantastic kid who's dad died when he was 8.  Then on his 12th birthday he receives a letter that can change everything.  Risking everything to get his dad back, Al has the adventure of a lifetime taking his trusty hamster Alan Shearer along for the ride.

This kids books is easy to read, faced paced, intelligent and very engrossing.  Einsteins theory of relativity is reflected upon and kids who have grown up in this technological era will love the tech new and old.
Parts of the book went over 8 year olds head and parts left her bored but for me and my 12 year old this book was a fantastic read.

On his 12th birthday, Albert (named after Albert Einstein) receives a letter that was written to him by his father before he died.  In it, his father sets Albert an almost impossible mission - to travel back in time and prevent him from dying.  After casting his doubts aside, Albert grabs Alan Shearer (his trusty hamster) and sets about finding his father's time-machine.  Will Al be able to alter the series of events leading up to his father's death and prevent history from repeating itself?
An engaging and pacey read, with more than a smattering of scientific theorem thrown in for good measure.  I'd recommend this for readers aged 9+

My son saw this in a book shop and really wanted to get it based on the title (he has a pet hamster and loves the idea of time travel).
The story follows what happens when Al receives a letter from his father on his 12th birthday.  Only - Al's father died when he was eight, and the letter asks him to travel back in time to prevent his fathers death.... The story has quite a 'realistic' style and is not an out and out fantasy book about time travel. It explores some interesting scientific concepts alongaide the ins and outs of step family relationships. Some aspects were a bit too 'old' for my eight year old son, but in general he really enjoyed it and it was a very enjoyable read that we both enjoyed.

I brought this for my 8 year old daughter. It is about a 12 year old boy who receives a letter from his dead Dad. It informs him that in the bunker of there old house is a time travelling machine. He is to travel to 1984 and prevent his Dads death. We were reading this together and really enjoying it. Unfortunately my daughter got really upset about hearing how the Dad died and didn't want to continue with the book. I, Mum really enjoyed the story and the build up about how to get to the time traveling machine. The characters are really good and the plot is great. Maybe she will enjoy reading this when she is 9-10. The book does say 9+.

The book was very good, apart from the fact that it took a long time for the time travelling to begin.
It really keeps you on the edge of your seat through out the whole book. And at times quite funny.
I would recommend the book to confident readers because some of the words were difficult and it's a very big book!!

I liked this book book because it was a science fiction, and it was quite exciting in parts. The main character was Al (short for Albert), who is a twelve year old boy, got a letter from his dead Dad's on his birthday telling him about the time machine. The book made me feel intrigued and made me want to read more.

Time travelling with a hamster was a really good book because Alfie was inspired by his dad to go back in time to find out how he died and if he can save him. He finds that he cannot actually get to the point to save his dad and this makes him feel really guilty like he has killed him again. In the end, it is heartwarming as he decided to move on and live with his mum and get rid of his laptop which helped him to time travel. I would like to read more books like this one and by the same author.

An absolutely amazing book by Ross Welford.
The rollercoaster of emotions starts in Chapter 1, and lasts throughout until the very last sentence.
The main character is a plucky young boy who is so curious it is dangerous; however, this is exactly the sort of character that was needed.
A fabulous read, and although a little bit long, it keeps you engaged for the entire story.

An interesting book if you like science fiction related stories or are fans of dr.who. This story sees one boy going on adventure back in time to try to prevent the death of his father but has to follow the rules of time travel at all times and risks changing everything by just the slightest mistake! And he does all of this with his pet hamster Alan Shearer for company! a feel good story that would suit ks2 and beyond aged children

I lost interest in this book because it took so long for the time travel to begin, sometimes some of the letters from his Dad about Einstein were a bit too sciency for me and I struggled to follow them. The story also chops and changes about quite a lot over the first 5 chapters, so it was a bit difficult to keep interested. I might try it again when I'm a bit older, as it looks like others on here have enjoyed the book. I am 8.
