When a crime needs solving, there's only one dog for the job! Join Nell the Detective and help solve the mystery of the missing books. There once was a dog with a keen sense of smell.
She was known far and wide as Detective Dog Nell. Peter's dog Nell has an amazing sense of smell. Her ever-sniffing nose is always hard at work solving mysteries and finding all Peter's lost toys. But Nell has other talents too . . . When she's not cracking cases, Nell goes to school with Peter and listens to the children read. Books about dinosaurs, books about space and even books about dogs - Nell loves them all! But one day Peter and Nell arrive at school to find all the books have disappeared! Who could have taken them, and why? Luckily, Detective Dog Nell, with help from the whole class, is ready to sniff out the thief! Written by Julia Donaldson and illustrated by the multi-talented illustrator and print-maker Sara Ogilvie, The Detective Dog is a fast-paced celebration of books, reading, libraries and the relationship between a little boy and his rather special dog.

We love Julia Donaldson books and this is one of our favourites! The hunt for the missing books was fun and entertaining. The pictures, as always with this series, were fantastic. We spent some time looking for details in them - noticing what children left behind in some of the pictures as the story went along! It was a compassionate story with a nice message / moral to discuss with children.

My daughter says:
It was exciting finding out who had the books. I loved it!

This offering from Julia Donaldson is a delightful tale stressing the importance of books being available to everyone (Detective Dog is a very enlightened soul!)
The illustrations are beautiful; a little different from her other pairings but stunning nonetheless. My children were transfixed by them as they read. They are a great help to young children to aid them in understanding the story alongside the language. There are lots of detail in them; my daughter in particular goes back through the book herself later to examine them in detail.
The rhyming prose is - as always - a sheer delight; it’s a pleasure to read and it’s bouncy, cheerful rhythm seems to help my children listen effectively and help keep their attention.
A must read for any fans of dogs, Julia Donaldson or lovely books in general!

We really liked this story and how Nell goes to school to hear the children read as the kids at my daughters school have a sneaky cat that goes into their classroom often. Nell the dog turns out into a great detective as all the school books are stolen. Who was it? a person who also loves books. The children come up with a great idea that is great for all of them. Another good book from Julia Donaldson with nice pictures.

My daughter was given this book for her third birthday. Like most of her generation she is already a huge Julia Donaldson fan and this felt like the next progressive step up from the Gruffalo/Stick Man/Room on the Broom style books. This one is more traditionally, but beautifully, illustrated and is a rhyming story of Nell the Detective Dog who is always finding things out but has a proper mystery to solve when the books from school all go missing. I enjoyed reading it aloud and my daughter loved the character of Nell and we both enjoyed finding out where the books had gone. We both spent a long time looking at the double paged spread image of the library as there was a lot of detail to look at and point out. We have been reading this every day for the last week or so and so far there is no sign of her interest waning. Another hit from Julian Donaldson.

Leo likes dogs and enjoyed following Detective Dog Nell's adventure to find the missing books. He particularly liked sniffing like the detective dog and looking at all of the different books the children were reading. The funny illustrations and rhyming text made this an exciting story that quickly captured Leo's interest and imagination.
