I bought this for my son as I like the illustrator, my son is fond of dog stories and we found a signed copy in our local book store. Neither my son nor I was disappointed!  This is the story of the first dog to go in to space, told from the dogs point of view. It's a great way to learn a bit about history and a fantastic way to understand the different view points of a story. This story is the *true* one - in which we learn that it was not humans who sent a dog in to space, rather, a dog decided to steal a rocket to travel to the stars.  The story is really well written, with a number of distinctive characters and lots of adventure.  We both loved reading this together. This is the first story we have read by Frank Cottrell-Boyce, and we will certainly be seeking out more.

Brilliant, hilarious and exciting! This book has been written by a dog! It is extremely funny and a must read particularly if you like dogs. The first chapter of the book introduces us to the life of a dog and how they see things differently. I laughed out loud as I read this and smiled through most of the chapters because of the funny dog antics. I would recommend this book for children aged between 8 and 12 but as an adult and an owner of a dog I loved it too! Did I mention this is a true story about a dog who is super-super-clever? Read it, you will not be disappointed

Loved this atmospheric story of a stray dog's search for home..loads to talk about and enjoy with children - would be brilliant for any class studying space.  A very decent length of story here for a WBD book and is a brilliant lead in to reading Sputnik's Guide to Life on Earth (which is very funny). Steven Lenton's illustrations are very appealing and the short chapters will make this very accessible to KS2 children of all abilities.

We really enjoyed this book. It was fun to hear a story told by a dog! The story was fast paced and exciting. At times we were quite concerned for the dogs safety because of the ‘man with the egg shaped head’. The dogs had lots of adventures with funny outcomes and we learnt about the importance of loyalty.  There were lovely messages throughout the story in bold print which gave us something to think about. We would recommend this story to animal lovers and people who enjoy a funny story.

I really enjoy books with animals in, and I really liked that the story was told by the dog, it made it more interesting, than if it was just told from a person's point of view. I liked the adventure in the story, and parts of it really made me laugh, such as when 2 dogs climbed into the spacesuit to make it look like a human walking.

I loved the voice of the dog in this book - quite a character. The cover really appealed to me making me want to read the book as I love illustrations by  Steven Lenton. A great book if you enjoy animal stories or books that are funny - or even both! The use of capitals for whole sentences will appeal to children reading the story aloud. Also the fact that the character of the dog looms large in this book. A great book to use your World Book Day token on!

This book is about dogs with no home and their adventures. The boys struggled with some of the dogs names and how to say them as they were not particularly straight forward. The book is in chapters so good for bed time reading as you can read a chapter and then wait for the next night to do more chapters.

At the end of the book there is a taster of another book called Storm Hound

This is a lovely story about a dog and her search for a family which takes her into space and on a magnificent adventure. It is full of lovely discussion points about friendship, the needs of animals and being a responsible pet owner and friend.
I love the way the story is told from a dogs point of view, with all there traits written into the story.

A nice short story about a homeless dog called Laika. The story is told by a dog and follows Laika and her friend on their adventures. Along the way Laika and her friends learn lots of things and survive to give us this good read.

A nice mix of fact and fiction as we follow Laika (the first dog in space) but was the story quite as simple as reported at the time?
This book is narrated from Laika's perspective and it seems she wasn't put in space by the Russians to never return, oh no she stole a rocket and lived a long long life in which to tell the tale.
A great little story for any child with a passing interest in space and which can also translate to learning about the "real" Laika.
Fab illustrations from Steven Lenton just add to the fun.

Laila the dog has always dreamed of flying to outer space. So she and her group of friends set off to go to space but all her friends are caught and sent to the dog pound. While finding her friends, Laila discovers an opportunity to reach her goal. A wonderful book about friendship.

I began to read this book and found the introduction a little difficult to get to grips with, as we progressed through the first few pages I was shocked to discover that written into the storyline was the fact that a dog owner had tied its legs together and thrown it into the sea. My son didn't seem too bothered by it but would be something I would like to have known was in the book before beginning to read it as that could be quite upsetting.

The dog characters in the book are funny and the names a little difficult to pronounce so even my confident 8 year old struggled with the pronunciation. There is  emotion within the book as you experience laughter and tears but great for children to see how important friendship is.
