Think your school is strange?
Feel like you don't quite fit in?

Fourteen-year-old Sherman Capote is an Air Force brat used to moving schools. But he's never been to a place like Groom Lake High, the high school for aliens at Area 51.

It's a totally alien environment filled with cliques and bullies, but he makes friends with a gang of galactic misfits: Octo, a quick-witted Ventitent (a twenty-tentacled "octopus"), Houston, a moody robot, Sonya, a rebellious lizard, and Juliet, an omnipotent goddess. But when the school bully, Ned, initiates a War of the Worlds, Sherman and his new friends must set aside homework, first crushes and high school proms to save the world.

ALIENATED: Grounded At Groom Lake is book one in the brand new series from award-winning author Jeff Norton, best known for his METAWARS series. A highly entertaining series with themes of diversity, friendship, teamwork and perseverance, ALIENATED features a wild mix of characters thrown together in Groom Lake High, a school like no other. Jeff Norton grips readers from the outset of ALIENATED, with his trademark funny, observant and fast-pacedstory-telling. A self-confessed reluctant young reader, Norton is now passionate about the power of storytelling to inspire people and influence change, saying “we live in an increasingly fractured society and I believe that reading is the very best brain-training for developing the empathy our world so desperately needs. But it’s imperative to make reading fun, soI wrote ALIENATED to be as fun and funny as films like GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY and MEN IN BLACK in order to deliver the themes of inclusion and diversity via an unforgettable roller coaster ride.”

At first i could not not get into the plot of the book but after multiple attempts of reading the first chapter i couldn't put the book down and i absolutely loved it. Involving space travel and adventure it falls into one of my favorite category of books. i would  recommend it to 9 years or above. I couldn't stop myself from reading start to finish and the book has some excellent vocabulary.

I won this book in a Toppsta give away and so thought it was best to read it before giving it to a child in my class to read and review and I was unsure how appropriate it would be for them. I would have never chosen this book due to it not seeming like my cup of tea but I got so into it, so much so that it is possibly one of my favourite reads recently!
This book is really well written and keeps you wanting to read on to see what happens next. The descriptions are also fabulous and I could imagine myself walking into the school cafeteria with Sherman!
I think this book is maybe more appropriate for children slightly older than my p5/6s but I still think some of the more advanced and mature readers would enjoy and engage with it well.

Alienated is a book of friendship, courage and expressing how you feel. I enjoyed what the aliens were called and how the were described. It engaged your imagination and creates a wonderful world full of aliens. The main character is threatened to be sent into Russian captivity because he sent a rocket into Russian airspace carrying his mother’s ashes. If he fires one more rocket into space he goes into captivity - this is a tough life for a rocket enthusiast. Instead of being sent to prison, his family are sent to Area 51 and Groom Lake High School. From then on he has to deal with bullies, crushes and an alien invasion. I would recommend this book to anyone 9+ to adults, especially if you like sci-fi. (Read by Samuel, Year6)

I thought the cover was bit dull and I didn't really want to start reading. Once I did a started to really like the story, and I especially liked the character of Sherman. As the story progressed it got better and better. I would definitely recommend it!

When Sherman and his twin sister (Jess) are moved to yet another base and school, they weren’t expecting to be the only human beings! I became thoroughly absorbed in this story and I really enjoyed how Norton covered the usual school issues but included aliens within them. I’m looking forward to getting the children’s feedback on this book - as i’m sure they will love it.

This book was an unexpected delight! I'll definitely be recommending it to other children. I loved the tone, and the fun characters Sherman Capote befriends. Definitely worth a read! This book made me go back to my school years, remember the good, the bad and the ugly, but made me laugh out loud with that amazing and unique twist to the classic "feeling out of place (alien, even)" sentiment we've all experienced growing up.

Quite simply- more than meets the eye!

From the very beginning Jeff sets up this really beautiful back story and from there onwards, things get a little bit unusual. Jeff always creates such fun and unique characters that you'd think otherwise wouldn't work but he possesses this superb skill where he can literally breathe life into the most zany character you can imagine- here he does it with so many of them that you are genuinely just drawn into this incredible world.

I love returning to Jeff Norton's writing, reading his work is like putting on a big comfy jumper. This book had me smiling from the off. It's fun, funny, a little bit wacky but woven between a really beautiful story. I couldn't put it down. I love how Jeff's brain works.

Also, I fangirled when I saw it was signed. Megan laughed, then realised that she squeals when her books are signed too.

A great mixture of fantasy, reality and fun.

Having won this book on Toppsta, I had to read it in order to write a review, but to be honest I would not have picked it up to read otherwise! However, I was completely taken with the book. Serman Capote and his sister are transferred to yet another school where they have to find their place in the pecking order. This school, however, is not like any other, situated as it is in Area 51.  Although the school is filled with aliens Sherman has to face many of the difficulties any child will encounter on being the new kid - social hierarchy, bullies, cliques, teen romance, school prom, etc. On top of all this, Sherman has to foil an alien invasion which threatens to destroy the planet. I really enjoyed the way the book was written covering some very serious topics with which most children will be familiar, but with a light touch and a lot of humour. It is very reminiscent of Frank Cottrell-Boyce's Cosmic, so if you have read and enjoyed that, Alienated:Grounded at Groom Lake is for you. Hopefully, there will be some more books in the series!

At first I thought this book might be a bit young for me but it was actually a really good book to read.  It was easy to get into and I liked Sherman  (the main character) from the start.
I do think this book is aimed at younger kids probably aged 10 plus, I'll pass it on to my sister as I'm sure she will enjoy reading it as well.

I found the writing hood and it was easy to understand. Sometimes I found it a bit boring but it had some good parts which were good to read and quite funny like when he nearly caused WW3.
