An exciting historical adventure from War Horse author and former Children's Laureate Michael Morpurgo.

Gracie and her friend Daniel have always been warned to stay away from the Birdman and his side of the island. But then they find a message in the sand and discover the Birdman is not who they thought. They build up a lovely friendship with him, but when the children get stranded on Samson Island they don't know whether to believe the birdman's story that the island is cursed.

Set against the backdrop of the First World War, in the tradition of Friend or Foe and Private Peaceful Michael Morpurgo brings the emotional reality of conflict to life in a way that is accessible to younger readers. Look out for his other historical adventures including An Eagle in the Snow and Listen to the Moon.

Praise for Why the Whales Came:

'The Scilly Islands off the English coast provide the setting for this well-written historical novel . . . good readers will find this a memorable adventure, no less immediate for its setting in the past.' Booklist

Another book from Michael Morpurgo, which I initially started reading as it was on my school Year 5 reading list but then I became completely engrossed. Like some of the other Michael Morpurgo books it is set against the backdrop of war, has a theme related to animals and has a strong emotional component. I would recommend this book as it is beautifully written.

This is the best Micheal Mopurgo book I have ever read it inspired me so much I went onto his next book, the wreck of Zanzibar. It was so exciting it had me on the edge of my seat and also made me bite my nails in terror. The main characters are Gracie, Daniel and the bird man. The gist of the book is that Gracie and Daniel had to prove that the bird man is not who he seems but will they get into trouble for straying too close to the supposed evil bird man. I would recommend This book to children over the age of 10 or extremely good readers looking for a 1 day read.

I liked it because it was dramatic and my favourite time in history, around World War 1.

I liked that there were some surprises and twists, you never know what's coming next. My favourite bit was when we found out The Birdman's name

The birdman was underestimated and people judged him before they knew him. Big Tim is a lousy bully and not nice to anyone.

I felt excited reading this book and urgent to find out more. I think anyone who likes adventures and the sea will like this story.

This book is the first one I have read and I can't wait to start reading some other books from Michael Morpurgo! When I started reading this at school, I couldn't stop reading it until it was lunchtime. It's about some children called Daniel and Gracie and they have heard rumours about the Birdman and that he's mad and loony, but they don't think they are true. When they start sailing their boats on the sea where the Birdman's cottage is, they get told that Samson, a place where the Birdman goes, is cursed. Then they wonder how they will break the curse and what caused it to happen! This book should be 11+ and I totally recommend it to people who love mysterious books that make you not want to put it down. I rate this book five stars as it is interesting and it's got a great storyline to it.
