This was a brilliant book, I really liked it because it was a mystery with lots of police officers. My favourite character was Klaus as he was big and strong! I would definitely recommend it to my friends.

Max is going to be travelling to see her great Aunt Elodie, when she finds out that a diamond stealer is on the same train as her. When the suspects are cut down to only 4, Max gets pulled into a mystery with the help from her mum, Sister Marguite.... I found this book one of the best I have ever have, so I obviously gave it 5/5! I loved the main storyline,  a mystery,  and all the characters. I have already read two Sylvia Bishop books now and would definitely recommend them to ages 10+!

A young girl called Max gets invited to go to see her grandma in Istanbul. Her journey there is by train from Paris, and she is taken by Sister Marguerite. Unknown by Max at the time of boarding the train, one of the passengers has a secretly hidden stolen diamond. Who is it? By the time Max gets to Istanbul, she has solved the mystery of who has the jewel, and who her grandma is actually is! What an adventure story!
I enjoyed this book and found it entertaining and funny. The illustrations are great and the characters are all interesting personalities.

This is a wonderful adventure story with all the classic hallmarks of a truly great 'Whodunnit' as well; shady characters, a fantastic journey to visit mysterious people and far off places, a multitude of red herrings, twists and turns. Sylvia Bishop has a wonderful style and this book has possibly one of the best similies heard in a while; 'as fast as the flutter of a phantom'. It has the reader on the edge of their seats from start to finish!

This is a great book. I love this author’s books (The Bookshop Girl is fantastic) and this is typical of her style. The characters are great - funny and unusual - and the story is a really good mixture of adventure, detective and friendship. I also really liked the way Max had to overcome homesickness - I could see it helping children when they feel strange away from home. There is depth to this adventure story and I would love to meet the wonderful Marguerite again in a sequel!

The most wonderful read! Very exciting, heartwarming, and very hard to put down! We adored this thrilling adventure story! Max has embarked on her travels with her guardian, Sister Marguarite. They are journeying from Paris to Istanbul by train. To overcome her homesickness, Mac begins to conduct her mini investigation into a recent Diamond theft. It will make you want to embark on your own adventure! Just brilliant!

An excellent story with an intriguing,fast-paced plot. Max (a 12 year old girl!) is going to visit her ill great-aunt in Insanbul by train! She is acompanied by Maximilienne - a crazy and funny nun! During the trip she unravels the mysery of a priceless missing diamond and brings the jewel thief to justice.
All in all this book is a real page turner. Good adventure / detective story although the chapters could be a little bit shorter. I really love the mystery and exitement of it, and the charachters are really interesting and diffrent. I think it's a beautifully written book, full of twists and surprises that will keep young readers glued.

I hope there are more books to come. Five stars!

The beautiful settings in this book really make it a special read. We were instantly transported to places like Paris and Istanbul. The story is an adventure story with a whodunnit feeling to it. Our favourite character was the main character Max. She has never left her city before but is strong and becomes confident. There are few illustrations in this book but they are beautiful. We enjoyed the way that each chapter of the book is a different stage of Max’s journey across Europe.

Max Morel is on a trip from Paris to Istanbul that takes four trains, to visit her great aunt. While travelling on the night train, she ends up solving a crime involving diamond smugglers!
There is a huge thrill in the chase to find the true identity of the criminal amongst a handful of suspects making it an edge of the seat read and I couldn't put it down.
I loved the story, illustrations and the blank pages where I could make my own notes and be an armchair detective myself.
I hope Max has lots more mysteries to solve in future books because this was so much fun!

An absolute cracker of a book. Full of adventure, European cities and unlikely friends. I would love to be Max, travelling across Europe, on the hunt for a missing diamond. I am yet to find a Sylvia Bishop book I don’t love. Just wonderful.

The Secret of the Night Train is a brilliant detective story. It has lots of twists and red herrings and it really kept me guessing. It’s an exciting adventure and a real page-turner of a book.

Eleven-year-old Max makes a journey across Europe from Paris to Istanbul by train. She is going to visit her great aunt Elodie and she’s being chaperoned on the journey by an eccentric nun, Sister Marguerite. Before long, the two of them are caught up in the mystery of the missing heartbreak diamond, which has recently been stolen from a high security vault in Paris. Max is thrown into a world of would-be-diamond smugglers, thieves and undercover detectives, where everyone on board the train is a suspect.

Max is a carefully nuanced and utterly relatable protagonist: brave, bright and quick-thinking, yet, at times, homesick and unsure of herself. You warm to her and root for her right from the start. Sylvia Bishop has created a whole cast of fabulous supporting characters too, from the pot plant carrying nun to the fiercely impatient Ester Rosenkrantz and the inept and peevish police superintendent Commandant Le Goff.

It’s not just the characters who are portrayed in such fabulous detail, the countries and cities that Max travels through and stops off at are depicted in glorious technicolour too. You get a real sense of the individual character of each city and feel like you’re there alongside Max.  Slyvia Bishop also makes astute (and witty) observations of train travel and train passengers and perfectly captures the excitement of travelling on a sleeper train.

The Secret of the Night Train is a thrilling journey packed full of humour, tension and drama. Grab yourself a copy and enjoy the ride!

I've read books by Sylvia Bishop before that I've thoroughly enjoyed but none more so than The Secret of the Night Train which kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time. Full of fun, adventure and a hint of mischief this has probably been the best book I've read by Sylvia so far.

The story was great, she really captured my imagination and I could see everything play out because of her wonderful descriptive style. She writes in such a pleasing and engaging way. I enjoyed the journey of the trains- the map at the front was a fantastic addition.

The illustrations, by Marco Guadalupi are absolutely befitting to the story and a pleasure to see.

I have had this book on my TBR list for such a long time and I finally sat down to read it last night and I devoured it.  I read it in one sitting and loved every word.
I think the plot was cleverly written and the characters had me guessing throughout the entire book- are they suspicious?  Who can Max trust? What will happen to them?
I allow myself time to get lost in the story and to not guess at what might happen next but to savour every moment.  This is a perfect book for getting lost in.
Max is a brilliant character, full of bravery and independence.  She has wonderful spirit and would make an excellent detective!  Sister Marguerite is funny and charming- a bit clumsy but I liked her straightaway.  The entire cast of suspects are funny, suspicious and varying in shapes and sizes.

The plot is wonderfully thought out and the twists and turns will keep you guessing all the way through.  I was surprised a few times while reading and I laughed out loud many times.

The cover and the illustrations throughout are just gorgeous and add a sense of mystery and charm to the book.

Pick this one up and read it!  You won't be disappointed!

I must confess I've always longed to board a sleeper train and travel across Europe, it would be such a joy to go to sleep in one country and wake up in a whole new place. So when I opened up my copy of 'The Secret of the Night Train,' I was instantly captivated at the thought of travelling with Max from Paris to Istanbul and that's before I knew she was about to become deeply embroiled in a complex crime-solving expedition. Beautiful storytelling meets compelling mystery unravelling in a tale of diamond smugglers, thieves and undercover detectives. Sylvia has a special talent for creating the most intriguing and wonderful characters who you can't help but fall in love with and Max is no exception. I was totally charmed and entertained by this exciting whirlwind of a story that had me devouring the whole book in one sitting. Marco's illustrations are beautifully detailed capturing the sheer joy of this great journey and the thrill of the chase as Max tries to uncover the true identity of the diamond thief. An irresistible and breath-taking read, I'm really hoping there is more to come from our delightful heroine Max.

I have read lots of detective books before, but they aren’t anything like this wonderful story. The central protagonist (Max) is a quirky girl with a thirst for books and owns a curious mind. She also is tangibly realistic in the way that she still feels homesick and nervous like any real person(and all good detectives) naturally would do. The unique setting of a train is reminiscent of Agatha Christie’s Murder on the Orient Express. The author gauges the perfect balance of comedy, unusualness and an intelligent plot, meaning that all eager readers can access Max’s adventures. My favourite chapter is chapter thirteen, The admirer, the rival, the menace and the child. It wraps up the grand finale in a very clever way. I would describe this novel in three words as: page-turning, easy-to-read and a rip-roaring-adventure. Try this next if you love mystery, suspense and something just a little bit different. I hope you will enjoy it as much as I have.
