This wonderful book tells the story of Tom Kitten, a mischievous little cat along with his sisters Moppet and Mittens. They are expecting visitors so their Mother dresses them in fine clothes then unwisely lets them go to play in the garden. The clothes are immediately dirtied and ripped, Tom's outfit is in pieces. The puddle-ducks end up with the kittens' clothes and when the kittens' mother finds them she is furious and sends them to bed, as they are not fit to be seen by her friends.

This is a cheeky, playful story that both my toddlers enjoy. It's a 5/ 10 minute read - so perfect for a bedtime story. Both my children like the illustrations, which are beautiful and whimsical. They help demonstrate meaning to some of the words we're reading. I like how some the language in the book is now uncommon - it helps introduce children to a different range of vocabulary.

We do have a conversation about how the kittens' Mother is wrong to smack them! I like how Beatrix Potter Tales provide lots of jumping-off points to explore further issues.

There is a lot of longevity in this book and will be enjoyed by them when they are reading confidently by themselves.

I loved reading this series of books as a child and was keen to read them with my daughter as soon as she was ready. She received the whole set of Beatrix Potter books as a gift and up until now, with the exception of Peter Rabbit, has been more keen on playing with the books in the box instead of reading them but now has become interested. Unfortunately Tom Kitten doesn't have the appeal or charm of some of the others. The main crux of the story is that Tom Kitten's mother wants him and his sisters to keep clean as they have visitors coming and then they go out and get dirty. She then smacks them and tells her guests they've got measles. There wasn't anything particularly fun about the story and despite the fact it is, of course, a dated book I didn't feel comfortable reading my daughter a story where the mother acted in such an unpleasant way. When she's older and we can talk more about how things were different in the past I think it would be ok but I didn't want to have that conversation when she's at a very innocent age.
