The first book in a laugh-out-loud, high-voltage, action-packed
adventure series for 8+ readers from hugely popular TV personality,
ALESHA DIXON, written in collaboration with KATY BIRCHALL.

10-year-old Aurora Beam lives at home with her utterly unremarkable
family... until the day she sees her little sister being picked
on in the playground and suddenly beams of light shoot out
of her fingers! It's time for her parents to drop a life-changing
bombshell. Mum is a secret superhero, fighting crime across
the globe while Dad looks after the kids at home.

As Aurora's own powers come into play, will she be able to balance
her new super skills training with school? Will she be able
to keep it all a secret from her friends? And when her mum's eviltwin
pops up, will Aurora think that being a super VILLAIN
might be more fun...?

Alesha Dixon says: My inspiration to create a superhero called
Lightning Girl began with wanting my young daughter to feel empowered.
It's been a dream to create a strong role model that any child
can look up to - I want my readers to see themselves in Aurora,
who is dealing with trouble at home and trouble at school alongside
her new powers. I also have a love of precious stones and
their healing properties; I have always been fascinated with their
spectacular colours and the positive energy that they bring. As
human beings we are always searching for something greater within
ourselves and a deeper meaning to life and it's my belief that
we all have a light within us that can affect change and bring good
to the world... we just have to harness it! :) Enter AuroraBeam!

We really enjoyed this tale about Aurora Beam who discovers she has superpowers when sparks burst out from her fingers one day.  It turns out that she is descended from a family of women who all have the power of light - her Mum's frequent "business trips" have actually been endless occasions where she's been off fighting crime!
When her friends discover her secret they band together to become "The Bright Sparks".
A great opener to what could be a long running series - the characters are fun and relatable and the illustrations throughout are amusing (loved the bright pink edges to the pages too!)

A great story for children who are developing confidence with their reading; Lightning Girl is surprisingly fun and has plenty of excitement as well. My 5 year old loved Aurora Beam (what a name!) and couldn't put the book down.

I read it to Rory aged 10 aged 10 & to Addie aged 8 aged 8
Lightning Girl 9781407180847
4 stars
This book was nice, Addie thought it may be suited to confident readers who were younger than her as although she enjoyed it she found the story slightly simple. The strong female characters were great in this book and we loved the backstory about how the ladies in the family became superhero’s.

I really enjoyed this book. It was filled with an adventurous and fun story. Each night I looked forward to reading that little bit more to find out what happened next. I took this book into school and told my friends all about it!
