The Gruffalo said that no gruffalo should
Ever set foot in the deep dark wood. But one wild and windy night the Gruffalo's child disobeys her father's warnings and ventures out into the snow. After all, the Big Bad Mouse doesn't really exist . . . does he? The Gruffalo's Child is the number one bestselling, much-loved sequel to the worldwide picture book phenomenon that is The Gruffalo . Julia Donaldson's trademark rhyming text and Axel Scheffler's brilliant, characterful illustrations combine once more to ensure that the Gruffalo's Child has followed firmly in her father's footsteps and that her story is one that children will ask for again, and again . . . and again! This edition features the classic story with a stunning redesigned cover and beautiful finish, making it a must-have addition to the bookshelves of all Donaldson and Scheffler fans - big and small! Also available with redesigned covers are: The Gruffalo, Room on the Broom, The Snail and the Whale, The Smartest Giant in Town, Monkey Puzzle, Charlie Cook's Favourite Book, and A Squash and a Squeeze.

A lovely wintery tale, beautifully illustrated by Axel. Creative, rhyming text from Julia accompanies the colourful pictures. In this sequel to 'The Gruffalo', the Gruffalo's child is overcome by curiousity and feels the need to go in search of the Big Bad Mouse. Sceptical about whether this creature exists, can age be convinced?

A clever sequel to my daughter's favourite book that follows exactly the same format as the original .
The curious gruffalo's child has heard stories of the Big Bad Mouse from her father (as a result of his experience in the original book). She tiptoes out of the cave while he's sleeping .... and meets snake, owl, fox...and finally the small mouse who once again cleverly escapes being eaten....
Things to do with the book:
(i) Discuss how this story fits in with Stickman's adventures.....
(ii) Discuss the behaviour of the gruffalo's child - should she have left the cave when her dad had told her not to?  (I think the book is a bit light on this)
(iii) Make shadows using a torch / bed sheet... to help understand how the small mouse makes himself look big.....
(iv) Ordering / position - we lay out the animals and have the mouse walk towards the gruffalo cave (meeting fox,owl,snake).... whereas the gruffalo's child walks towards where mouse lives (so meets the animals in the different order.. snake, owl, fox).
(v) Visit the gruffalo / gruffalo child statues hidden in the nearest forest (http://www.forestry.gov.uk/forestry/infd-9htmte) - they all show different poses  from the two books.

This is more of a slow grower than the Gruffalo I think.  It took me a while to really love it but w got there eventually!  It doesn't have all the charm of the original but it's still a lovely story.

The Gruffalo's Child is the sequal to the much loved story The Gruffalo. This story about the Gruffalo's Child who gets bored one night and wants to go and find the 'big scary mouse'. My children loved this book. It's their most favourite bedtime story.

Lets go and hunt for the BIG BAD MOUSE... does he exist? The Gruffalos child certainly wants to find out. A fun read to both kids. We now have the short film of this and the kids know what's coming thanks to the book. A firm bedtime favourite here.

A lovely sequel with all the same characters from before, but this time with the Gruffalo's inquisitive daughter.  The mouse of course has a clever trick up its sleeve to avoid being eaten, and the familiar rhyme and repetition means it is on constant repeat in our house.

We probably prefer The Gruffalos Child to the original Gruffalo just because of the father / daughter relationship and the fact that it's set in the snow at night making it seem more magical. Same returning characters (Fox, owl, snake and mouse) which brings familiarity and great sing songsy rhymes by Donaldson. Daughters love the illustrations with the eldest liking the Big Bad Mouses shadow- the perfect sequel.

We have had a run on Julia Donaldson books today!
This one has been a hit in our family as it is exactly the sort of thing my children would do - they wouldn't believe us if we told them there was a reason not to go somewhere because they are so inquisitive! Therefore, they can relate to this book well!
Again, we love how clever the mouse is and how he/she outwits The Gruffalo's Child. It is definitely the case in our house that the littlest one is in command - just like in this book!

I was looking forward to reading this book since we both loved Gruffalo so much. The truth is I laughed soooo much while I was reading this book for the first time. Julia Donaldson once again did it, usually I don't like sequels, but this is definitely an amazing sequel to The Gruffalo! It's such a great idea and now I can't imagine one without the other. And yes my son loves this story as well!

The rhymes are very catchy and easy to remember, even my 2 year old will sit and read along with me and my 6 year old. Full of fun, and excitement for all, would definitely recommend this book to anyone.

What a fabulous sequel we are really enjoy these two books as a gruffalo trail is opening soon. My daughter asked for these books as she said she want to be able to tell the story to her friends and help them understand all the characters. This particular book tells the story about the gruffalo explain to his child why gruffalos should never go in to the dark wood. And how the story go through the forest meeting different characters. This story brought up different conversations about listening to your parents, following rules and not going out alone. Brilliant rhymes fun illustrations.

In book is just as good. The gruffalo s child has heard so much about the Mouse, a big bad Mouse, so sneaks out the cave whilst the gruffalo is sleeping to go in search of the big bad Mouse. He meets the snake, owl and fox then eventually the mouse. It is a very clever ending and children love it.

A brilliant follow up to The Gruffalo, which features his child sneaking out of the Gruffalo cave one night as she wants to find the big bad mouse.  With the familiar cast of Fox, Snake and Owl helping her on her way she finally encounters wily mouse who's a sharp thinking as before!  It flows and rhymes beautifully and is a firm favourite in our house

A sequel to The Gruffalo. The Gruffalo tells his daughter all about the scary big bad mouse. When he falls asleep, she decides to sneak out to find him. Is he really as scary as The Gruffalo has told her?

Great book - just as good as the original. Love the story, love the rhymes, love the illustrations.

A must for any Gruffalo fan.

A favourite book in our house, the Gruffalo's child wants to know more about the Big Bad Mouse in the original Gruffalo book, even though her father has warned her away. So one night when the Gruffalo snores, she ventures on her own into the wood to see if she can find him, meeting the owl, mouse and snake of the previous book. But will she meet the Big Bad Mouse? It's a lovely and cosy wintery book, and you can look out for Stick Man along the way. Nice to see a single father and co-sleeping in a popular picture book too.

This is a great follow up to the much loved book The Grufflo.
The Gruffalo tells his child not to go into the woods because he might run into the Big Bad Mouse. However, the Gruffalo's child is bored and sneaks out while Dad is sleeping.
My daughters enjoyed reading this book with me. They love the Grufflo's child adventure spirit.
They love the way author use the same description sequences from her Grufflo story .
A fun packed tale with fantastic illustrations.

This is a firm family favourite in our house! We have read this book hundreds of times and the kids never tire of it, neither do we. The illustrations are beautiful, as can be expected from Axel Scheffler, as he does most of the illustrations for the Julia Donaldson books. We love the way Donaldson writes, the rhyming slang, the humour and the skill of writing really engaging children's books.

"The Gruffalo's Child" follows on from "The Gruffalo", the story about a mouse's journey through the deep, dark woods and the different animals he meets along the way, all of which want to eat him. He outwits them all with the tale of a creature so scary that they let him go. Unbeknownst to him, the creature really does exist and when he meets him, he uses his previous encounters to outwit the Gruffalo. This book introduces the Gruffalo's child who disobey's his father's orders to stay in the cave and ventures out to find the big, scary mouse who eats Gruffalos. Another great book which I would highly recommend!
