The Tailor of Gloucester was first published in 1903 and tells the story of a poor tailor trying to survive in his freezing workshop over a hard winter. He has a terribly important commission to complete for the Mayor of Gloucester's wedding on Christmas Day but is ill and tired, and before long is running out of food and thread, as well as time! How will he possibly complete the beautiful coat and embroidered waistcoat? Luckily, there lives in the dresser, some very kind and very resourceful mice who set about helping the poor tailor with his work. Not only are they exceedingly helpful, but they are also, luckily, far far too clever for the tailor's sly cat, Simpkin. The Tailor of Gloucester is number three in Beatrix Potter's series of 23 little books, the titles of which are as follows: 1 The Tale of Peter Rabbit
2 The Tale of Squirrel Nutkin
3 The Tailor of Gloucester
4 The Tale of Benjamin Bunny

20 The Story of a Fierce Bad Rabbit

Beatrix Potter doesn’t disappoint. The writing in this story makes me feel all warm and cosy. Perfect bedtime story on a winters evening.

Written in 1901 this is a charming fairy tale that was written in a letter to a friend that had been ill.  The story is about a poor tailor whi has been given an expensive comission. Alas, he falls ill a few days before he is due to complete a coat for the mayor.  What will happen?
The style is very old fashioned and quaint, as are the accompanying pictures. There are many words that are not in everyday use now, and my children loved learning what they meant - so the book is fanatic for extending the vocabulary of young children!

This is a long tale, set back in time. written beautifully and with lovely illustrations. A small book easy for sophie to hold herself. perfect for bedtime. Lots of tricky dated language used but not too irrelevant. Still a classic tale and lots o detail and charm.

I loved reading this series of books as a child and was keen to read them with my daughter as soon as she was ready. She received the whole set of Beatrix Potter books as a gift and up until now, with the exception of Peter Rabbit, has been more keen on playing with the books in the box instead of reading them but now has become interested. This book is different to the others in the series as it is much more text heavy. Whereas other in the series might have about four or five lines per page in the Tailor of Gloucester there is a full page of text on each page. This was slightly off-putting in reading to our two-year-old as she was keen to move on to the next page quite often. The story itself is one of the nicer ones about a poor tailor who can't do the work himself but who gets lent a hand by some other mice. Even the pictures seemed to be in a slight different, less cosy, style. I think this would be better for an older child with more patience for the amount of text.
