This is the story of Albert, a poor but clever rat who lives in the town of Cheeseworth. The people of Cheeseworth love making cheese and love winning prizes. But they also hate the rats of Cheeseworth, because the rats love . . . cheese.
So, as the townsfolk (with Mary their prize winning cow) set out to make the biggest cheese in the world, to win the biggest cheese making prize in the world, the rats plan to have the big cheese for themselves. But the rats' plan does not go well, and all of the town's rats are imprisoned. When Albert manages to escape he is chased through the town and down to the river where Mary, the prize cow, has become stuck and needs to be saved. Albert hides and the crowd find Mary but they cannot free her.
Can Albert save the cow?
Can he earn his freedom?
Can he change the town of Cheeseworth forever?
