It's an exciting day for Almanzo as the Wilder family visits the county fair in this second My First Little House Book adapted from Laura Ingalls Wilder's classic Farmer Boy. There are contests, races, and good things to eat, and Almanzo can't wait to see what the judges think of his special pumpkin. Jody Wheeler's luminous illustrations bring Laura's beloved farmer boy to life.

This book is a great book to read in the autumn. It's an introduction to one of the events in Farmer Boy, adapted into picture book form. Almanzo Wilder and his family are going to the county fair. He is excited to experience all the different activities, but his focus is on seeing how his pumpkin does in the competition. After a long and nervous wait, he's overjoyed when his pumpkin takes the blue ribbon. His sisters also have success in their competitions, meaning the entire family is happy when returning home.
This book, and others in the series, introduce the characters and events of the Little House series in a way that is accessible for younger children. Much of the text is taken from the actual books, and the illustrations are inspired by Garth Williams's classic illustrations. My daughter enjoys reading this book, identifying the characters, and quoting sections of text. One of her favorite parts is when Almanzo is scared by a donkey's "hee-haw." She also likes pointing out the vegetables in the detailed illustrations. As an American, I'm happy to have the chance to introduce her to the idea of county fairs. We even attended one when visiting family last summer. It was nice for her to do something like Almanzo did. This book is a fantastic way to link past and present, especially if your child is interested in growing vegetables. And it's a nice gateway into reading the actual books aloud. I highly recommend any of the books in this series of picture books.
