This is a really cute, simple, short story about an unexpected visitor, a bird called Spencer and his travel adventure. My kids absolutely loved this book which I read to them. My little girl is just learning to read and sound words out so she really enjoyed trying to read the words on each page.
I felt the book was age-appropriate and the storyline was fast-paced enough that it kept their interest throughout. I loved that although the book is about sounds, it is not just about that, and the sound aspects of the book are interwoven in a really subtle way. My children and I used the book to pick out and discuss the different sounds, we had guesses at what was making the noises and that was really fun and engaging. The storyline is quite exciting and unpredictable which kept my kids focused and I also appreciated the part where the bird perservers in his quest to find employment, I think that had a really positive and powerful message for my children. Both Bobby and Gracie loved that the book was about a family of animals, as they are both massive animal lovers and this made them love the story even more. They thought the family were really cute and sweet.
The illustrations are really cute, I felt like they had a really 80's feel to them which I personally as an 80's child myself, the book had a really nostalgic feel to it. I also liked how the book is part of a larger series and is based on characters from that series, my kids definitely are interested in reading the other stories in the series and finding out what their favourite characters have been up to.
