'Wise old man, won't you help me, please? My house is a squash and squeeze'. What can you do if your house is too small? The wise old man knows: bring in a flappy, scratchy, noisy crowd of farmyard animals. When you push them all out again, you'll be amazed at how big your house feels! This brilliantly funny story is the first ever picture book written and illustrated by the award-winning team of Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler, authors of "The Gruffalo".

Another book with a message-this one "be grateful for what you have". The lady in this book thinks her house is too small-throughout the story she comes to realise it is exactly the right size for her. Any book with animals goes down well with my children. We also love the combination of Donaldson and Scheffler-you know you're going to get lovely fun rhymes and beautiful illustrations.

A Squash and A Squeeze is a lovely book. Julia Donaldson can do no wrong in our house and we absolutely loved it. 'A little old lady lived all by herself...' but soon finds lots of animal friends to join her in her somewhat tiny home. The book is such fun and has a really lovely story to tell. We squealed with laughter and found ourselves reading in unison as the repetitive rhythmic words make it so easy to remember and recite. It's great because the book helps to subtly teach children to be happy with what they have and to embrace it. My son loved this story and goes back to it again and again.

A very sill story of a lady who thought her house was too small.  The wise man encouraged her to fill it with animals, and then let them out to make her see how much room she had!  Very silly but good fun to read.

We love love Love this book in our house! Great little story and beautiful rhythm and rhyme that makes it such a fun book to read. I love all the animals and Julia Donaldson brings them to life so well. A tale teaching you to be grateful for what you have and be 'full of frolics and fiddle-di-dees' - one of my favourite Donaldson books with wonderful illustrations.

This is a great story about an old lady who thinks her house is too small and asks a wise man for advice. His advice is unusual which is part of the fun of the story. This is still a popular story with my 4 and 7 year old.

Julia Donaldson is generally a safe bet for an excellent children's book and doesn't disappoint with this.

The rhyming prose is a joy to read out loud; the melody seems to keep my toddlers engaged and listening.

Aside from the lovely story (of an old woman who laments her small hour and a wise old man's remedy to this) the book offers a great opportunity to discuss the fantastic illustrations in great detail. We usually read the story together then go back to the beginning and I'll get the kids to point out and describe the pictures as we work our way through again.

Both of the kids enjoy the story so much I've made a story sack for it. They love acting out what the animals are doing!

This is a treasured favourite with us; I highly recommend it.

I read it to Nursery 2 aged 1 to 3
Squash and a Squeeze 9781405004770

I was introduced to A Squash and a Squeeze at the nursery where I work. It's a great book with the moral of being content with what you have. A woman is not satisfied with the size of her house until she goes to the wise old man. He suggests bringing more and more animals into the house, until she can hardly move. Once the animals leave, she realizes her house is perfect for one.
Like all Julia Donaldson books, the text has engaging rhymes and repetition. It can hold the attention of one year old children for a few pages, and children nearing 3 follow along and start anticipating what's next. Axel Schreffler's illustrations are simple and humorous, following the text perfectly. I'm considering buying this book for my daughter's 4th birthday because she's at the age to really enjoy this book.

This is such a great book, I can’t rate it highly enough. My child loves animals so this is such a hit for us. We all know the words by heart we have read it so much. I love stories with a moral to them and although my toddler won’t understand the moral at the moment it feels good to read it to him.

A woman complains that her house is too small, and asks a wise old man what she should do about this.  He advises her to invite each of her farmyard animals in, one by one, to live in her house. The conditions get more and more cramped, and the woman cannot understand why she is being given this advice.  The story is great (with a good moral ending!), and my children live the sillyness of this book. Another great Julia Donaldson story.

We love Julia Donaldson in this house and this book certainly doesn't disappoint!
Leo loves that it rhymes and has words that are repeated so he can finish reading the sentences that I start. He finds the antics that the animals get up to funny and can't believe the mess they make!
I enjoy using different voices for the old lady and the wise old man too.
The underlying message is that we should be grateful for all that we have which is a valuable lesson to impart.

Another wonderful Julia Donaldson book. We love the quirky farm animals (especially the Goat). The repetitive lines of this story make it a fun read for little readers. Addie especially likes the moral set within this story, by grateful for what you have got!

Another great book by my favourite children's author; Julia Donaldson.
My daughter loves this book. Perdita has had this read to her on many occasions and never wanes in her enthusiasm for it. And whilst it is a fun story it has a great message hidden within to be grateful for what you have as it is enough even though you may desire more.
The repetition is great for my daughter and she loves to complete the sentences with 'my house is a squash and a squeeze!' with lots of added giggles!
This has been a great book for Perdy's older brothers to read to her at bedtime and listening in to their giggles is a pleasure.

There's a strong moral in this story - it's an age-old story given a Julia Donaldson/Axel Scheffler spin. It's about an old lady who lives in a small house and lots of animals come and join her and she feels a bit squashed.  It's a tale about appreciating what you have but told within a beautiful rhyme. My daughter loves the animal pictures and is starting to join in with the words.  Originally I felt it was a little too moralistic but after repeated reading I now just love enjoyment my daughter gets from the pictures and the words.

Oh how they laughed! We read this book, and many other Donaldson classics, numerous times and then went to see "The Tiddler and other tales" at theatre, which also featured "A squash and a squeeze". Following which we have never been able to read this book without doing a southern accent.

The story is about a woman who complains about her house being too small, so the wise old man tells her to take her farm animals in one by one, until she realises it is even smaller so has to take out all the animals one by one. Therefore, showing her that her house was just the right size for her all along.

An old man helps a lady whose house is too small by getting her to take all her animals inside her house, so it's really small, and then she realises it was a fine size before the animals were in it. It's a funny story, not too long and a rhyming text. I read it on my own with no help needed. I read it to my 2 year old sister who enjoyed it as well. It's quite simple, with repetition, so good for little ones too. Great bright illustrations by Axel Scheffler.

Another great rhyming riddle! A clever story about a lady who thinks her house is too small, but then she discovers that its not, and it's actually alright.

Although not a favourite in our house, we cannot deny that this book is clever and quite unique.  The characters aren't very loveable, but the story still works as it should.  Classic Axel Schellfer pictures are great for kids.

We are big fans of Julia Donaldson books but we where quite disappointed by this one.  We found it a bit boring and everytime I tried to read it to my son he got fed up and asked for a different book. This is unusual for him as he would have me read her other books like The Gruffalo ten times in a row.  The pictures are the usual great illustrations from Axel which kept my son entertained for a while.  The story has a great message about being grateful for what you have but think my 2 year old was too young for this message.  We will try this book again when he is a little older.
