Everyone is freaked out when circles of scorched earth start appearing in Halifax - on the moors, the parks and even the football pitches. Seth is most disturbed of all - he sees the shadows of the past. But when he looks into a Viking's murderous eyes and smells the stink of burning flesh, Seth knows he must stop this cycle of supernatural suffering. With his friend Nadiya, can he discover the dark history behind the forces attacking their town?

Tom was hoping he was picked to review this as he loves football, its not just about football its about Vikings too and both my boys cover history in year 5/6 so this will be helpful to inspire them with their project work.

The Front cover is definitely misleading however they still enjoyed the book very much.

this book is brilliant and girls should not be put off by the front cover as its not all about football and is a good book for girls to read as well

I really like this author

At first I thought this was predominantly a book about football from the front cover, but I soon realised this was a clever story about Vikings too. Seth and his friend Nadiya have to solve the mysterious haunting of their local football stadium, by shadows only Seth can see. Seth's shadows are very blood thirsty, and in my opinion, would really only be suitable for a year 6 child and above. I was impressed by how the story intertwined today with the past, the story is very accessible for year 6 children, and would work well as a class novel or for a guided reading group.
Overall definitely a good read that I'm going to enjoy sharing with my year 6 class in the new term.  It will link well with our Viking topic.

When I first got this book I thought it was about football but when I started reading it, it became clear that is was more a story about solving a mystery about  the Vikings at the football ground.

Very well written and suitable for both boys and girls aged 10 +

I feel the cover doesn't reflect the story very well

I have recommended this book to my friend to read

My daughter could not put the book down! She was mislead by the cover into thinking it was about her favourite sport (football) but do not be offput! She got more than she expected in reading this action-filled book that left her in suspense (and begging me to get her the rest of the series

Defenders killing ground is a awsome book. I would strongly suggest this book for 7 to 8 year olds; from the look of the front cover you would think the book is about football but the author has cleverly put football and vikings together into one amazing book! If you love football and Vikings this book is for you!

I received this book as a Toppsta Giveaway, and having read other Tom Palmer books, was quite excited to read this one. However, the story didn't flow very well, and I found the language and the story quite childish. Seth's mum has cancer, which obviously makes Seth's life very difficult. However, I felt I couldn't really empathise with Seth, and Seth's reactions to his Mum having cancer don't make much sense. The whole Viking problem was confusing as well. The reason why Seth could see the past wasn't explained very well, and why he could see that moment in the past made no sense. Confusing a ring of fire with stadium floodlights seems a bit far-fetched. The reason why the mirror stopped him seeing the Vikings made no sense either. Overall, I feel that this story is more suitable for 7/8/9 year olds.

I usually like Tom Palmer's football books, however this book was different for me. I found that the chapters were too short in length, so I could not take in all the information that was squeezed in. I would recommend that this book would be more suited to 7-9 year old readers, or people who are interested in history. I did not really fully understand the history aspects but the book was still good in parts.
