I recently bought this book as I remember it well from my childhood as it was one of my favourites. I love the pictures and the story too. I hope I don't parent like Bernard's do! It is a funny story and one that my two boys aged 5 and 2.5 both love.

For me good illustration makes a good children's book and David McKee is from the top draw.  But in this case the text is more than a match.

In only around twenty lines we get two major plot twists and learn the subtle and inexorable power of domesticity over the savage.

The only way to condense it further would be to turn it into haiku.  Marvellous.

A very odd story and not my favourite to read however, the children love it. The story has a very deep message of a boy fighting for his parents attention. This message isn’t really at the children’s level.

Very funny book, although it should really teach parents something rather than children. Haha

Unfortunately we really don't like this book in our household. It was recommended to us as a classic but was really disappointed. It does have very simple text and repetition, easy for children to remember (not now, Bernard) but is really sad that Bernard is ignored and feels unwanted by his parents, not what a loving home should be even if we do all have busy lives our children should still feel listened to.

I really disliked this book... poor Bernard.
The little boy keeps being told by his parents they are too busy for him. It really pulled at my heart strings. Poor old Bernard and the end is sad.

My 4 year old thought it was cool that Bernard found a monster though. Although he didn't like the ending and got sad that Bernard would never she his mummy and daddy again :(

This is one of those 'classic' children's books which you read and are left wondering how it earned its reputation. It's a very simple story with little text but also little to endear it to children. Poor Bernard discovers a monster but when he tries to tell his parents, he is repeatedly ignored. Eventually, poor Bernard meets an unpleasant end.

All in all, the story is not very entertaining and is slightly distressing for young children. If there were some moral to be learned, it may have redeemed this book, but the only lesson (don't ignore your kids) seems to be aimed at parents, so I really can't recommend this one…
