In Fact and Fiction, Margaret Anne Harvey's previous work for children, she included a story entitled Poppy with Pogo and the Pony which was based on a particularly vivid dream of hers. The Enchanted Oak Tree is also based on one of her dreams. It concerns Alfie and his twin sister Lucie. They discover an old hollow oak tree in the woodland at the bottom of their garden. This enchanted tree has a door and a window which enables them to turn the inside in to a hospital for injured animals and birds. After learning that his children are caring for their woodland friends, their proud father builds them a tree house, which is named 'The Enchanted Hospital '.
