Charles Perrault was an early collector of fairy tales. His version of 'The Sleeping Beauty,' published in 1697, had a complex and chilling ending , involving ogres. The simpler modern version of the tales has proved to be one of the most romantic of the traditional fairy tales. Set in a small European Kingdom in the 15th century.
