We use this book at home to complement the reading books that the children bring home in P1. It uses very simple words that the children can sound out and has clear illustrations which can help the children with what they are reading. It has been an extremely helpful book for us.

My daughter loves this book, we have 2 cats of our own so she can relate to it as well, at 4 1/2years old she can read it on her own and is really enjoying the way it is helping her with her school reading books as well. Great characters, not many words but enough to keep her interested.

This is perfect for a beginner reader, easy to sound out words which can give great confidence to any kid starting out. The story is short and has some good repetition in for children to recognise a word they read previously and also has lots of punctuation to talk about. The story is funny enough to keep a child interested and the pictures are funny too.

The focus in the songbird books is to match one sound to one letter, they use simple CVC words, with sounds that can be easily blended together to make the word. Womderfully illustrated stories written by best-selling author Julia Donaldson. Each page contains lots of repeated words, to help with recognition. Each book has inside cover notes to support parents with the children's phonics practice and some lovely questions to ask about the book.
My son found these books really great to help with reading.

We bought the songbirds collection to read alongside the books my daughter is bringing home from reception. The illustrations are fun, and the words are pitched at the right level for sounding out. They have really helped my daughter gain confidence in reading. A great collection.

My son has just started reception year at primary school.  He has just started learning phonics, and I had noticed him recognising the sounds in every day words, and conversations.  I thought I'd try him with this book, as it had very simple short words, and he knew all of the sounds in the words.

He started off by sounding out each sound (letter) and then blended together with ease, for example 'c-a-t....CAT!'

My only criticism with the book is it uses exclamation marks and question marks, which isn't that great as they haven't learn about them at this stage.  I also needed to teach him how to pronounce the word 'I' because they don't learn to sound it that way.

Overall, it's a great book for the first time readers because it's so simple, and it's very repetitive.
