Sam’s best friend is her pony, Zelda. She takes good care of her, talking to her and sharing secrets, much to another stable girl’s amusement. When Araminta brags of the gymkhana that she and her pony will win, Sam is instantly disheartened. Encouraged by the stable owner, who sees her caring ways, Sam enters and trains very hard. Sam and Zelda are ready to enter the competition, only to find their saddle has been stolen, right before the main event! Will they still be able to enter? Or will Araminta and her pony win after all?

This series contains lively female leads and exciting adventures involving animals, mistaken identities, twisted fairy tales, mysteries, football, aliens, magical powers and deep sea monsters. Each title contains simple sentences with line breaks, engaging illustrations and questions at the end to ensure that the text has been fully comprehended.

This hi-lo series for struggling and reluctant readers has been written for children aged between 8 and 13 years, whose current reading age is between 7 and 8 years. These age-appropriate short reads have 32 pages and are written by talented authors writing stories with relatable characters. They incorporate a large font size and text separated into bite-sized chunks, along with carefully considered letter and paragraph spacing that can reduce visual stress. The series has plenty of practice at one level, allowing consolidation of learning before moving on to more challenging reads. The vocabulary list of tricky words can aid comprehension before reading the book.
