Hairy Maclary's Rumpus at the Vet is a hilarious rhyming story by Lynley Dodd. "Sniffles and snuffles and doses of flu - itches and stitches and tummyache too . . ." Hairy Maclary is waiting to see the vet with lots of other pets. Then something happens to turn the waiting room into a kerfuffling scramble of paws, a tangle of bodies and a jumble of jaws . . . what can be the matter? Another rumbustious, rhyming romp with Hairy Maclary (from Donaldson's Dairy!) and friends! Lynley Dodd is an award-winning author/illustrator who lives in New Zealand. She is enormously popular for her rhyming stories of the unforgettable HAIRY MACLARY and his friends. She worked as a teacher before beginning to write her own books in 1974. Hairy Maclary is visiting the vet when all of a sudden someone tweaks him so hard they pull out a hair! This sets off all manner of chaos in the waiting room!

My four year old twins love this book. The rhymes are super and they find the story absolutely hilarious. The illustrations are great too with much to interest them.

This is the first Hairy Maclary story that we have read but we're definitely going to read more of them.

Another great Hairy Maclary story. This book made my children laugh and they loved the chaos of it. These stories are written so well and telling them out loud really makes them come alive.

We have an anthology of many of the Hairy Maclary stories but this one is a favourite. The hero causes mayhem (as usual), and the rhyming scheme of the words adds to the sense of pace. Appeals to the mischievous side of little people, especially ones who love animals.

Read to My daughter age 6, this used to a favourite and revisiting it got the same response. The rhyming entices you to join in and all the commotion at the vets creates giggles and laughter. Illustrated greatly to keep children entrigued and wanting to turn the page to see what else is going to happen.

We currently seem to be revisiting some of the picture books we have had for ages. This rhyming picture book was a favourite a long time ago. The illustrations are lively and have a certain charm to them. My son still likes the mischievous Hairy Maclary. He still finds the vet tripping on a lead, and the ending in particular, very funny. Great book.

My children are huge fans of the Hairy MaClary story and this tale of his chaos-ridden trip to the vets is one of their favourites. The story is straight-forward and easy to follow; it begins in the vets waiting room and the drama that ensues is a snowball effect started off by a mischievous bird...!
The story is told in rhymes so it's a pure joy to read out loud; there's lots of room for being extra expressive due to the content of the tale so it's a really fun one to share - I find it's a great one to entice them when they're feeling lively! The story itself is very funny and has the pair of them giggling like mad throughout. The ending is fab and leaves both kids laughing with their imagination whirring at full speed.
The language and vocabulary are more appropriate for older pre-schoolers but that said I've read these to my kids since being very young toddlers and they have always enjoyed them. I have noticed that the older they get the more they understand the humour and find value in it but I wouldn't be put off reading them to the very young, thanks to accompanying pictures. Not to mention the variety in the vocabulary makes it a great way of exposing them to less common words (like Rumpus for a start!)
The illustrations are gorgeous; they're very charming and lovely to examine. They are evocative and depict the feeling of the story very well. They complement the text and allow even very young children or those with limited receptive language to get the gist of what's going on. Both children like to pour over them and take a lot of pleasure in talking round them amongst themselves - especially to guess or relive what comes next.
The Hairy Maclary series is great; we visit it frequently and Hairy MaClary himself has even become the star of some of their games, inspired by what they have heard in his stories! We highly recommend this riotous romp; it's great fun and abundant with havoc! A must for any child.

Hairy Maclary goes to the vets and while he is there his tail is given a tweak and chaos begins at the vets. It's funny story, and my boy loved it when Hairy Maclarys tail was given another tweak at the end. The rhyming and descriptive words are brilliant and we really enjoyed this book. Lovely illustrations too!

The illustrations in this story are hilarious... Hairy Maclary is at the vets, and unfortunately a bird seems to think that HM's tail is something to play with. After plucking at the end of it, all havoc seems to break loose. There are animals, leads, medicine and feathers flying all over the place, and my favourite of all involves the vet near the end, (I won't spoil the surprise!) Some of the Nursery children started to notice the rhyming words in this story today, and it's always lovely to have a familiar character to find in several story books. I would say that the discussions that came from looking at the illustrations were mostly adult-initiated, lots of questioning to talk about what is happening/how do the characters feel etc. and this book will probably be revisited when the children's understanding of rhyme has developed more. It is a funny story, but one that's appreciated more by children 4/5+ with a wide vocabulary/understanding of humour.
