The story was funny and written in such a way that it was excellent to read aloud. There were only a few characters so it was easy to make up voices for each of them and the book rewards the awkward girl who tries hard, and punishes the bossy overachiever. What's not to like!!

I love this book. It is about a girl called Mildred Hubble who goes to Miss Cackle's Academy for Witches and makes a complete mess of it. Mildred is clumsy, on her first day she breaks her broomstick! She manages to get by until she accidentally turns Ethel into her enemy. This book is hilarious, and I would recommend this book for ages 5-9.

I chose I chose this book at my school book fair because I like the program on TV.  The book was slightly different to the program but I really enjoyed it.  It was easy to read and the print was quite clear.  I look forward to reading more books in this series.

My daughter has loved watching the new BBC series of The Worst Witch and do she really wanted to read the books after I told her how I loved reading the books when I was young. We read the first book over a few bedtimes, mostly I read it to her, but Poppy read some pages to me and coped with the text for short bursts, I think she will be ready to read it independently in a little while (she is currently Year 1) Surprisingly the text doesn’t really seem dated. There are a few words which aren’t really in common use now. My daughter loved the storyline, and recognised parts of it from the tv programme she had watched. Every night she asks to read more, we are now on book 3. The books follow a young witch named Mildred Hubble and is set in a school for witches. Mildred doesn’t have the best of luck and always seems to be in trouble especially with the formidable Miss Hardbroom! My daughter easily followed the storyline and her favourite character is Mildred.

A magical sorry about a young witch, Mildred Hubble, and her time at Cackle’s Academy. It’s safe to say her schooling isn’t all small sailing, and she isn’t a natural!

My 8 year old daughter really loved this book. It follows the mishaps of a witch called Mildred who has a reputation for being the worst witch at Cackles Academy. She is a really likeable character and her adventures are great for young readers. I would say this book is for a younger market as my 10 year old would not enjoy these books as much as they are quite 'young' for her.

I read this series as a child so am now reading them to my six year old daughter. I'm glad to say she loves it as much as I did! The story hasn't aged at all, very simple to follow and great fun with lovely illustrations. My daughter loves all of the magic and the characters - even the nasty Ethel and Miss Hardbroom! Slightly different storylines to the CBBC series of the books but my daughter was not disappointed at all. We would highly recommend this book (and indeed the rest of the series).

Definitely a 5 star story!
I just loved this story I read it at school in 1 day!
I loved learning about the characters my favourite character is Mildred and her kitten Tabby.
My favourite part of the story was when the witches got their own broomsticks and learnt how to ride them, it was funny when Mildred kept falling off!
Milsred gets herself into all sorts of trouble I liked the part when she turned Ethel into a pig!!!
I can't wait to read the next book!

My daughter is seven and has absolutely loved the first book in the Worst Witch series. We are introduced to Mildred who is trying her very best to be a great witch but hasn’t quite got the hang of it. She loved the bit where Mildred got her spell mixed up! But for all her mishaps Mildred proves her worth as a witch in the end. We have moved straight onto the next book in the series - she can’t wait to see what happens to Mildred and her friends next

I love the worst witch books, you can read the whole series over and find something new in it each time. I feel quite similar to Mildred, she doesn't mean to be in the middle of all the trouble. Somehow she always does something to fix things by the end of the book. A great read and would definately recommend.

This is the first book in the Worst Witch series.  It is about a girl in a boarding school who gets up to a lot of mischief.  She is training to be a witch.  Every witch in the school has a black cat but however Mildred got a tabby cat who is scared of heights!!!! This is very hard for Mildred because she is meant to fly on a broomstick with her cat sitting up straight on the back of the broomstick!  Mildred just can't help getting into trouble and is very clumsy.  She has two friends who try to help her stay out of trouble but they usually make things worse!  There is one nasty girl called Ethel.  She is the teacher's pet.  I loved this book because there is a lot of drama and I was excited to find out what happened next!  I can't wait to read more books about Mildred.
