A bear searches for his missing hat in the bestselling, multiple award-winning picture book debut of Jon Klassen.

In his bestselling debut picture book, the multiple award-winning Jon Klassen, illustrator of This Is Not My Hat and Sam and Dave Dig a Hole, tells the story of a bear who's hat has gone. And he wants it back. Patiently and politely, he asks the animals he comes across, one by one, whether they have seen it. Each animal says no (some more elaborately than others). But just as it he begins to lose hope, lying flat on his back in despair, a deer comes by and asks a rather obvious question that suddenly sparks the bear's memory and renews his search with a vengeance... Told completely in dialogue, this quirky, hilarious, read-aloud tale plays out in sly illustrations brimming with visual humour and winks at the reader who will be thrilled to be in on the joke.

Very funny with gorgeous pictures. Bear has lost his hat and asks animals if they've seen it. All claim they haven't but bear later realises that one of them was wearing the hat when they lied about its whereabouts. The repercussions are an interesting twist...

This book is just awesome - we're massive fans.  Bear's hat has gone missing and he asks several animals if they've seen it - they all say no.  Suddenly he remembers that one of those questioned was actually wearing his hat - he rushes back to re-claim it (with disastrous results for the thief).  The illustrations are just fab and there is a real sense of humour about the whole thing.  I'm not sure my 5 year old has quite cottoned on to the real ending for the thief but it's still a treat for him and even more so for us as parents.

A great story about a bear hunting for his missing hat by questioning other animals. Lovely humour ours tale. My almost 2 year old doesn't get the humour, but he still loves the story all the same.

My son and I have enjoyed reading this book for the last two years, since he was around 4. The language is very simple but the book stands up to repeated readings due to the wonderfully subtle black humour. I used to read this to my son; now he reads it to me (and it is one of the few books he will choose to read himself). I think we'll both be reading it for many years to come!

This is the favourite book in our house. It is our go to book whenever we are feeling blue as it is so funny. I love it when the bear finally realises what has happened to his hat and my daddy loves the ending and always laughs a lot. A perfect daddy and daughter book.

This is a fantastic book. Lovely, muted illustrations and a story about a bear looking for his red hat. But where is it? Slightly dark ending, but my daughter didn't seem to notice and I found it quite amusing!

So funny, without even trying! An easy 5 stars. Great pictures, and easy to read.  I love that each character has it's speech in different colours so you can change the voices when you read it.

Amusing ending too!

I just LOVE this book. It's such an under-stated, brilliantly funny book, and I find myself sneaking it out of the bookshelf often to re-read it as I never tire of it. My children, aged 3 and 6, love it too. It tells the very simple story of a bear who loses his hat, then sets out to find it by asking the animals he meets along the way if they've seen it...until he has a sudden - and momentous - realisation that HE has seen his hat. Impossible to say more without ruining the plot, but I can wholeheartedly recommend this book as a perfectly told tale, with plenty of opportunities to practice your different voices to amuse your children!

IThis quick read is the darkly humourous tale of a bear in search of his missing hat. He travels through the forest patiently and ever-so politely asking all the animals he meets if they’ve seen his hat. Alas, to no avail. A deer helps trigger his memory and connects a few dots which leads him to a less-than-forthcoming rabbit along with his beloved hat. Things do not end well for the rabbit, not that the bear admits it! He mirrors the rabbits protests about the hat when another animal asks where the rabbit has gone!
The illustrations are beautiful; dreamy and simple which accompany the simple prose wonderfully! My children respond to them very well and my 2-year Old spends a lot of time post-read re-examining them all at her leisure. They are almost like water-colours.
It opens up the conversation about honesty and what to do when someone isn’t telling the truth - or what you should do when you’ve done some untoward. We talk about how people can tell when you’re not being truthful and how it can sometimes get you in to trouble along with taking this that aren’t yours.
I like the constant stream of dialogue between the characters with the book relying mainly on illustrations for descriptions. It focuses the story on the issue at hand and throughout the whole story the focus is all about finding the hat which works really well as helps build anticipation from the get-go.
On the first telling both children were as surprised as the bear that the rabbit had the hat, having not pieced it together and my 2-year old was “a bit sad” that the rabbit “disappeared”; my son informed her unceremoniously he’s “been eaten” because “he’d been naughty”! Now they start giggling and shouting about his fate the second we turn the page to the thief! It even appeals to me with it’s subtle but dark humour- the shameless details of their crimes does make me laugh.
This is a frequent read in our house; my youngest regularly selects it. It does prompt some discussions about appropriate behaviour etc but at it’s heart it’s just a fun story I’d highly recommend with a twist parents appreciate as much as the kids, perhaps even more so!

This is possibly my favourite book to read to my daughter! I find it really funny and the illustrations are lovely. I like to put on silly voices and it opens a dialogue for my daughter to talk about what is going on in the pictures.

The Hat trilogy is fabulous.

Part 1: "I want my hat back" - bear has lost his hat, and he goes to find it... asking other woodland animals if they've seen it.... who are helpful in differing degrees. He lies down, sad, resigned to not finding his hat..... then he remembers something...  Simple words / sentences that are really accessible to a nascent reader.... but requires quite sophisticated comprehension to how people are feeling...... understand that sometimes whats said is not always said out loud....motivations...... and not everyone tells the truth.

One of the best children's books I've read.

A bear sets goes out to find his missing hat. he asks all the animals he meets if any of them have seen his hat. They all say no, but one of them is not telling the truth. Great illustrations and understated humor. It appeals more to the older kids, 5 plus, as they get the concept of one of the animals lying about the hat and they can use the clues to try work out which animal is lying.

I would give this book five stars for the beautifully understated writing, gorgeously simple illustrations and deliciously dark humour, but I think some of it was lost on my nursery class! I think a child of 4-5 plus would find it as funny as I did, but it is a shorter story for older children. Thankfully the entire trilogy is now available.

This is an unusual book as the pictures are not the usual bright and bold you find in many kids' books. They are quirky and funny and understated, a bit like the story. My nearly 2-year-old doesn't get the main joke of the book but she still loves the story and we read it together often.
