Who says princesses can't wear black? When trouble raises its blue monster head, Princess Magnolia ditches her flouncy dresses and becomes the Princess in Black.

The first in a funny, action-packed series for young readers who like their princesses not only prim and perfect, but also dressed in black! Princess Magnolia is having hot chocolate and scones with Duchess Wigtower when... Brring! Brring! The monster alarm! A big blue monster is threatening the goats! Stopping monsters is no job for dainty Princess Magnolia. But luckily Princess Magnolia has a secret - she's also the Princess in Black, and stopping monsters is the perfect job for her! A rollicking read from the award-winning writing team of Shannon and Dean Hale and illustrator LeUyen Pham.

Mouse Says "The Princess in Black is amazing.  There is a monster in it and it is a bit scary but it doesn't stop the book being good. It was so good I read it in one go at my bedtime reading time.

The pictures in the book are great"

Mum Says "Mouse read this book easily and got through it in one evening, she says she really enjoyed it and thinks friends her age would like it too!  Mouse said she was unsure about the monster in it but not enough to stop her reading. I like the look of the book and think the illustrations really add to the story"

I really enjoyed this book and read it all in one go. I liked how the princess became someone else when she had to fight the monsters and then went back to being the princess. The pictures in the book really help me imagine the story in my head.

Princess Marigold is the perfect prim and proper princess, but she has a secret alter ego; The Princess in black who with the help of her trusty horse is always on hand to save the her kingdom from the goat eating mosters from Monster Land! This is a great book for early independant readers, with a simple story to follow and lots of short chapters!

This book is brilliant. It is really different from normal princess stories. The princess in black has a secret identity and is really cool.

What a delightful little humorous adventure. The Princess in Black is a courageous young girl who goes by Princess Magnolia when she doesn’t have to fight monsters. But when she does, she puts on her black garments and flies into action!

This is a short book of ninety pages with lovely pictures that tell the story along with the narration. LeUyen Pham, the illustrator, also illustrated Shannon Hale’s middle grade memoir, Real Friends, which is a delight too.

Though the Princess in Black fights monsters, which is an honourable thing to do, no one can discover she is Princess Magnolia underneath it all. Why? Because princesses don’t wear black! And princesses don’t fight!

I can definitely see this becoming a cartoon series. It would be good to have more empowered and assertive young female characters on screen. Plus it’s original, because really, the princesses we know so well (thanks Disney) don’t wear black and certainly don’t fight monsters. I guess we shall see.

This is a beautifully illustrated book about a princess who secretly fights monsters when her monster alarm ring goes off. Princess Magnolia does things that a normal princess does not do and trying to hide it all from the nosy duchess

Lovely book, nicely illustrated. My five year old enjoyed being read the story and also read some of it herself, a good book for those beginning to read on their own.

My daughter was really pleased to receive this book and read the whole thing in little more than half an hour.  I'm not sure she was that entertained with the story, possibly a bit too simple,  but read it to the end anyway.  Is an easy to read book with colour illustrations suited to early readers and those starting independent reading so age 5/6, or younger if read to them.  I think my daughter would've enjoyed this more a year ago as shes into paperbacks now and slightly more challenging reads.

Beautifully illustrated a twist to the story . I read this book in 10 mins. I enjoyed the story and think that younger readers or readers gaining confidence would enjoy the book and be left wanting to read more.
This is why I have rated it as 4 stars .

Addie really enjoyed this story. It is a short but interesting book with a plot that is easy to follow. Addie read this independently and found it fun and a little scary in places and said she thinks it is a book her friends would like too.
