Black Beauty is the finest horse imaginable. As a young colt, he lives an idyllic life under the guidance of his mother, Duchess, who teaches him to always be patient and do his best. Once he is grown, Beauty is sent to the charming Birtwick Park. There, under the care of kindly owners, he befriends the cheerful pony Merrylegs and the spirited but troubled mare, Ginger.

For a while, Beauty's life seems perfect. But when tragedy strikes, his owners are forced to sell him. Suddenly, the sweet-tempered animal is forced from a life of comfort to one of unimaginable cruelty. From neglectful masters to the grueling work of London cabs, he faces countless hardships. Yet against all odds, Beauty's hope remains unbreakable - for he is a horse of extraordinary courage and is determined to survive.
