Orphaned in infancy, Heidi is raised by her Aunt Dete until a change of circumstances sees the girl placed into the care of her paternal grandfather. A curmudgeonly recluse living in the Swiss Alps, he's soon won over by Heidi, who blossoms in the mountain environment.
