A giant-sized adventure story from bestselling author Julia Donaldson.

Every giant knows beanstalks and little people don't exist. Almost every giant, anyway . . . When Jumbeelia's curiosity leads her to a real-live bimplestonk at the edgeland of Groil and down, down, down into Colette, Stephen and Poppy's lives, the children find themselves in BIG trouble! They're desperate to get home - but it's not easy when even the wasps are giant sized!

This upside-down fairy tale is perfect for fans of Roald Dahl and David Walliams, as well as children who enjoyed The Gruffalo when they were younger.

Julia Donaldson was a previous UK Children's Laureate and has been honoured with an MBE.

'The Giants and the Joneses had humour, suspense and an invented language that enthralled me' Evening Standard

A very clever twist on Jack and the Beanstalk told from a girl giant perspective. We loved the giant's language dictionary at the back of the book. A gripping read that had us both wondering what was going to happen next. A little scary at times- six plus is probably the best age group.

This book takes the idea of Jack and the Beanstalk and flips it round the other way. The story itself focuses on the adventure of a girl giant called Jumbeelia. Jumbeelia loves stories about 'iggly plops'. In the giant world iggly plops are people and they live down a beanstalk. They are the fairytale characters that giant children love to read about. One day Jumbeelia throws down a bean and a beanstalk grows up into the giant land. Then she climbs down the beanstalk to try and find some real life people. A fun adventure soon ensues with three iggly plop children trying to escape from Jumbeelia. This book is a really refreshing and really clever twist on a classic fairytale. There is even a special language the giants speak called Groilish and at the back of the book there is an English to Groilish dictionary to help you understand everything. We thoroughly enjoyed reading it and learning some Groilish along the way.

It's a real pleasure to read this Julia Donaldson's fantastic book about two distinct worlds. The story describes about three young children and a young girl giant.its a modern version of Jack and the Beanstalk fairy tale.My daughter loves this adventures version and enjoyed reading the giants language.
We love the translation dictionary in the back.its a fun book to read and suitable for slightly older children and their parents.

This book takes the tale of Jack and the Beanstalk and turns it around. Jumbeelia the giant girl goes down the beanstalk (bimplestonk) and takes 3 children back to giant land. The adventures start as the children try to get back home.

The book is interspersed with Groilish (giant language) words and I found this was a good way to check that the boys were understanding the story. They were quick to understand that a whackleclack was a button based on the language around the unusual word. There is also a dictionary at the back for reference.

This was really enjoyable to read as a family as it was a great, descriptive story.

A bit surprised about its length when I first saw it. I thought it would take some time to go through. However, it didn't seem to take long at all.My son has loved it and has listened to attentively every bedtime since we received it. It is a bit quirky, especially with the inclusion of the Giant language, which my son found hilarious. On the whole, a lovely magical adventure.

this book linked with the school project about twisted tales where it switches the story of Jack and the bean stalk where the giant girl who has heard stories about humans but everyone else thinks they are make believe. She throws the bean and makes the bean stalk grow climbing down and taking things from the human world. some of the giant words are easy to guess with out looking others you need to look up in the back of the book.

We are huge fans of Julia Donaldson books - this is a slight change in her usual style as we are used to the large illustrated picture books with large print, and this is a traditional paperback, but nevertheless her writing style is still just as funny and full of quips as ever! we loved the "Bimblestonk" and the Igglyplops!  a twist on the traditional beanstalk tale with some very funny characters - we would recommend this book albeit perhaps more suited to a slightly older audience, as it is a thick book with a lot of writing.

I liked the idea of the story, the giants at the top of the beanstalk keeping hold of some human children, and the adventures that they had, but it felt a little clunky at times. The giants have their own language and the book jumps between the two languages, which makes it quite hard to follow at times.
