A book-themed birthday party

What do you do when your birthday plans are cancelled because of corona virus?  You hold a socially distanced book party of course!

My birthday plans were changed because of corona virus this year.  I was meant to be going to see a play in the park with friends and having a cinema trip (both had to be cancelled).  I am really lucky because we haven’t been ill with the virus so I know I can’t complain or moan, but I thought there had to be something that me and my friends could do.  So, I looked on the Toppsta website and I found some AMAZING things!!

I made a pack of resources from my favourite books, Dork Diaries and Amelia Fang:

Amelia Fang and the Barbaric Ball

There are some great activities to accompany this Amelia Fang book, including a step by step make a batty bookmark and an Amelia Fang crossword (just like Count Drake).

and looked at new books and their reviews to find a new author that I have not read before (I picked The Strangeworlds Travel Agency).

The Strangeworlds Travel Agency: Book 1

At The Strangeworld's Travel Agency, each suitcase transports you to a new magical world and the free activity pack to accompany this title provides a worksheet and suitcase template to cut out and fold so you  create your own magical world.

I posted the pack to my friends for my virtual meet up.  We all sat together on zoom and designed dresses for Nikki and looked at Laura Ellen Anderson’s illustrations to recreate pictures of Amelia.

After, I designed a new world in a suitcase (my world has happy lighthouse and changes hair colour – there’s a fairy that you need to give a password to before you can go on the rides).  Thank you Toppsta for the suitcase template!

A book-themed birthday party

My mum had sent my friends an Amelia Fang book each, instead of a sweet bag (I would have liked both if I’m being honest).  We are going read the book and meet up on zoom again to tell each other about it and do some more of the sheets.  I don’t know how we’ll do it and keep safe, but we want to swap the books around and read each other’s.  Maybe if we swap them and leave them in bags for 72 hours?  Do you know Toppsta?

Thank you to everyone who works at Toppsta and all the authors for giving me these resources and ideas!  I had a great birthday filled with activites, friends and books!!

Lottie also sent author Laura Ellen Anderson pics of her lego creations of Amelia Fang! You can see pics over on Twitter.
