50 Brilliant Halloween Books for Kids

It's that time of year again! Whether you love it or loathe it, Halloween is very much in the calendar! Personally, I love the dressing up and the kids of course love the trick or treating. We also love the opportunity to read a scary book. Not TOO scary, mind you but just enough creepiness to make them squirm! These are our Halloween favourites this year...

We're Going on a Ghost Hunt: A Lift-the-Flap Adventure

Cute bunnies dressed up to go trick-or treating? We’re in. This sweet lift-the-flap picture book is perfect for getting the little ones excited about Halloween.

This picture book is full of sweet illustrations of exciting Halloween scenes, as we read about little bunnies trick-or-treating before bedtime. We’ve got screechy bats and black cats, white owls and pumpkins, and the nice touch of finding five little ghosts hidden under flaps in the book.

You already know how much we love this series of picture books, including We're Going on an Egg Hunt and We're Going on an Elf Chase, and this Halloween-themed addition is no exception.

Fingerwiggly Ghosts

If you’re looking for ways to keep your toddler engaged during reading time, we think Fingerwiggly Ghosts is the perfect Halloween book!

As parents, we love keeping our little ones engaged as they discover books. With this cute book about ghosts, our children, as well as ourselves, can stick their fingers through the holes to become the arms of two friendly but easily scared little ghosts who go trick or treating on Halloween night.

Our favourite detail of this book is that there are surprises along the way as the ghosts float through the spooky forest towards a creepy little house which is surrounded by pumpkins, broomsticks, bats and cats...So cute.

That's not my bat…: A Halloween Book for Kids

The best novelty board book for the Halloween season to help our toddlers’ with their sensory skills.

It’s a truth universally acknowledged that if you’re a parent, you’ve got at least two or three of the That’s Not My… Usborne board books stashed in your child’s little library. We love this special Halloween one to add to the home library during the autumn season.

Like all the That’s Not My… books this one has lots of sensory panels: fluffy tummy, fuzzy legs and soft wings on the bats that flutter and roost in this sturdy board book. It also has foiled edges in purple, making it feel extra Halloween-y and special.

Wolfboy Is Scared

We were so excited to hear that Andy Harkness’ Wolfboy picture book would be making a comeback with a second book all about the big feeling that is fear.

This is a really special book: the bold illustrations, the bouncy and engaging storytelling. In the first book we got to explore big feelings that come when you’re super hungry, but in this second book, we’re looking at a feeling so often associated with Halloween: fear! Wolfboy claims to not be afraid of the Grumble Monster, but we’ll let you imagine how that goes…

This book is a great way to tackle fear with your little one, and teaching them that sometimes, fear itself can be scarier than any monster.

Ivy Newt and the Time Thief

For that tricky stage of emerging readers aged 6+, we couldn’t recommend Ivy Newt and the Time Thief more. It’s a great Halloween read, part of the Ivy Newt adventure series.

When children start to learn to read independently, we have to do everything we can to encourage them to keep on going by finding great books to read throughout the year. Ivy Newt in Miracula is one of those series we think can work as a great companion through this stage. This book ties into Halloween, and Ivy Newt and her trusty friend Tom must solve a haunted house mystery, help free a witch, and break a powerful sorcerer’s curse before it’s too late.

The magical world of Miracula is one young readers will not want to leave, and the beautiful black-and-white illustrations throughout the book help visualise this world even better.

Bella Bright and the Ghost Game

This is a fantastic Halloween-inspired middle grade read that is perfect for children who might be moving to a new town, making new friends or dealing with bullies.

The story begins with eleven-year-old Bella moving to a new town and starting a new school. And as if that isn’t enough to be dealing with already, she finds herself hosting a Halloween sleepover, during which a teenage GHOST visits and hides Bella’s three new friends. Only a riddle will help Bella find them.

We love that this is a story rooted in real life, making it much more accessible to children and relating to their experiences.

The Legend of Ghastly Jack Crowheart

This middle-grade book made us mostly laugh and sometimes gasp, and will be an absolute hit with readers aged 8+.

We really loved reading this funny middle-grade book with a ‘ghostly’ twist. In this book, the clever main character Lil will have to come up with a solution to a haunting menace. The Squawking Mackerel, an miserable inn she works at, is on the brink of failure due to some pesky (and truly hilarious) highwaymen. Together with her trusty crow, Augustus Scratchy, her new friend Ned, and a pocket full of stale, tooth-chipping dumplings, she will have to cook up a plan to stop the nasty highwaymen from stealing from her customers.

We couldn’t recommend this book more if your little reader loves books with friendship, found family and guaranteed laughter.

The Train of Dark Wonders

This is a great cosy middle-grade read for the Halloween season, with a little girl, Bess, as its protagonist, who is on a mission to save her grandad’s collection of curiosities.

What’s sweeter than a little girl helping her grandfather’s business? If ghastly ghosts and scary pumpkins aren’t quite your thing, we believe this book is a great compromise to still read something fun for Halloween.

A curious Odditorium, a magical train, The Land of Halloween Sweets… this book is brimming with magic and has some really amazing characters, including Beau the puppeteer, Louis the violinist and Maria the fire witch. We think it’s one of the most imaginative books coming out this year.

Kevin the Vampire: A Most Mysterious Monster

Black-and-white illustrations, fun and accessible language, and a really good story are what make up the brilliant Kevin the Vampire for readers aged 7+.

If you’ve got a visual reader likes us who also needs a really good plot to sink their teeth in, this chapter book will not disappoint. We’ve got a curious eleven-year-old vampire at the centre of our story, whose name is Kevin, an awoken mysterious monster (who has not eaten in YEARS), and a bunch of humans to save from said monster.

We really think this chapter book has all the ingredients to keep readers hooked, and are so excited to read the next books in this illustrated fantasy adventure series.

Woodwitch

We’re big fans of Nevermoor, The Worst Witch and The Dark Is Rising, so the award-nominated middle grade witchy fantasy series Hedgewitch is right up our street.

We’ve already raved about Hedgewitch, the first book in this series. And we’re very excited to say that the second book did not disappoint. We’re now familiar with the magical world of faeries, Hedgewitch, and just as Halloween is approaching, main character Cassie and her friends notice dark shadows creeping out of the Hedge and villagers behaving strangely. We won’t spoil anything for you, but we can say that Cassie’s magical training will be truly put to the test.

We could not recommend this more to get into the Halloween spirit this season.

The Witches of Pendle

For a slightly creepier, scarier read, we cannot help but recommend the latest The Ghost Hunter Chronicles book for YA readers.

This is a slightly nostalgic read that both readers aged 11+ and adults will enjoy. We get to meet our favourite ghost hunters, Eve, Clovis and Tom, again, and this time they’ve got a tricky situation: a witch’s bottle from the 1600s has been opened, releasing curses, spells and havoc. The witches want their revenge for the unjust trials from long ago.

This is a great Halloween read, but also a fantastic read for the whole year, for those of us who love all things witchy.
