    Cassandra Clare Biography
Cassandra Clare is one of the most popular young adult fantasy authors around. Her first book City of Bones (Book 1 in the Mortal Instruments series) was published in 2007 and became an immediate bestseller, hooking readers in to the Shadowhunters’ universe. She has since gone on to write another seven series set in their world, including the steampunk prequel trilogy The Infernal Devices, as well as the Magisterium series for slightly younger readers which she co-writes with author friend Holly Black.

Cassandra Clare (real name Judith Lewis) has been described by the Wall St Journal as “the new queen of fantasy” and her books have sold over 50 million copies worldwide. An American author, she grew up all over the world, born in Iran and living in several different European countries, including the UK. Her books are loved for their elaborate world-building, the vivid characters and the gripping plots full of love, intrigue and magic. The City of Bones was made into a Hollywood film in 2013 and the Mortal Instruments has also been adapted into a popular Netflix series with a second season due to come out this year (Shadowhunters: The Mortal Instruments).

All Clare’s YA books are set in the Shadowhunters universe. The four urban fantasy series that make up the Shadowhunters Chronicles all take place in different locations and eras, from Victorian England to modern day LA. In book one The City of Bones, Clary Fray stumbles into an alternate New York whilst searching for her missing mother. This New York (the Downworld) boasts faeries, warlocks, werewolves, vampires, angels, demons and of course shadowhunters – the warriors who preside over the demons and supernatural creatures on behalf of the Angel Raziel. As Clary gets closer to the mysterious shadowhunter Jace, she gets more and more deeply involved in their secret world. The books have everything you could possibly want: true love, action, cliff-hangers, characters you’ll fall in love with and plenty of mystery. Most readers start with The City of Bones but you can jump in at the start of any of the series - City of Bones ( Book 1 in The Mortal Instruments), Clockwork Angel (Book 1 in The Infernal Devices) or Lady Midnight ( Book 1 in the series The Dark Artifices). Her new book Chain of Gold which is out in November 2019 will start a new prequel series set in Edwardian London. Check out this timeline of Shadowhunters books for the complete list of series. The Shadowhunters books are great for readers 11 and upwards and have a huge adult as well as teen audience.

Clare’s other bestselling series The Magisterium is a fantastic place to start for slightly younger readers (around 9+), the five books are set in an underground school where apprentices are trained to be mages, including the rebellious Callum Hunt. In the first book The Iron Trial Call is determined to fail his test to get in to the Magisterium thanks to his father’s distrust of magicians, but despite his best efforts is taken on as an apprentice and starts his journey in to the magical unknown.

Both the Shadowhunters Chronicles and the Magisterium series are firm fan favourites and you can check out Toppsta readers’ five-star reviews to prove it.
