We all know the legendary Judith Kerr for her Mog the Forgetful Cat picture books, but did you know she also wrote a semi-autobiographical middle-grade series drawing on her real-life experiences of living through World War II?
Judith Kerr wrote When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit fifty years ago, based on her journey, so that her children would know where she came from and the lengths to which her parents went to keep her and her brother safe. It has gone on to become a beloved classic that is required reading for many children all over the world and is an unforgettable introduction to the real-life impact of the Second World War.
Today these books are considered modern classics. They tell the story of a Jewish family that escaped Germany, just as war is about to break out in 1933, and move to London. Young Anna's adventure begins in a whole new world, where all things adventurous, funny and even exciting await. While the books discuss serious topics of war, mental health and death, there is also much light and hope in each story, as Anna grows older and understands more about the past she escaped as a child.
