The Hate U Give Series

Inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement, this powerful classic-in-the-making by Angie Thomas  encourages urgent conversation regarding police brutality, systemic racism, and the importance of community activism. This series is a reading great choice for ages 14+.

The Hate U Give depicts sixteen-year-old Starr’s struggle to navigate life and justice following the tragic loss of her best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer. Being exposed to two opposing communities, the impoverished neighbourhood she has grown up in and the fortunate private school she attends in the suburbs, Starr experiences internal conflict regarding the right way to respond to this tragedy. As the only witness, Starr has the power to use her voice to challenge the corruption that is entrenched in the police force and advocate for her community. However, doing so will position Starr and her family in potential danger, with many people attempting to silence Starr’s truth.

The books that follow in the series have different protagonists, but each continue to encourage readers to interrogate themselves about justice, stereotypes and expectations, and explore the reality of life in the neighbourhood of Garden Heights.

Since its publication in 2017, The Hate U Give has sincerely inspired and moved readers. In response to this reader engagement, the novel was adapted into a film just a year after.
