Imagination Island, written by Mel Taylor-Bessent and illustrated in black-and-white throughout by Alessandro D’urso, is the perfect imaginative middle-grade series if you're looking for a main character with a difference. 

The books are set in a world where a place called Imagination Island exists, and periodically four children are named to become Protectors of the island. The coveted job is wanted by all children, except for 10-year-old Luca, who stumbles into the competition for title by accident. And so the race begins... We love the main character, who is truly a hero without knowing it. Plus, each book is packed full of adventure, with characters finding their way through tricks and traps, meeting evil fairies and even pulling the plug out of the ocean (!). The series is creative and imaginative, doing just what it says on the tin.
