The Umbra Tales written by Janelle McCurdy and illustrated throughout by Ana Latese is a brilliant fantasy adventure series for middle-grade readers, drawing on themes of spellbinding magic, family love and thrilling adventure.

The books follow a young girl called Mia as she pursues her destiny in a world of fantastical creatures with the help of loyal friends. 

Her journey begins as a young girl, scared of the magical beasts made of shadow and starlight that threaten the city of Nubis, but determined to save her parents, who have been captured by an evil Reaper King. We follow her throughout the books as she learns to tame the umbra and ultimately hone her own unique powers to not only save her family but her entire city from the tyranny of the dark.
