In post-apocalyptic Chicago, humanity is ruled on one principle: all citizens are defined by their dominant characteristic which they must live and act according to. Society is divided into five factions where citizens live with other like-minded comrades. Each faction believes their characteristic to be the most important value: Candor value honesty above all things, Abnegation selflessness, Dauntless courage, Amity peace and Erudite intelligence. In this society, there is no such thing as free will.
Beatrice Prior is born into the Abnegation faction, but when she turns sixteen, she must choose the faction to which she will devote her life. At the initiation, Beatrice makes a surprising choice – to follow her true nature and transfer to Dauntless, becoming Tris. In her new faction, Tris realises how divided society is. She has to figure out who her friends really are, complete the extreme tests of endurance, whilst at the same time keeping her potentially deadly secret. As civil war rages, Tris battles with keeping her friends and family safe, a new romance and the danger of her true nature as a Divergent.
The dystopian trilogy written by Veronica Roth has been a huge hit with young adult readers thanks to its addictive storyline. Tris is a strong and determined female character and her relationship with Four is intriguing. The books deliver plenty of action and great battle scenes and are ideal for Science Fiction fans. In 2014, Divergent was also adapted into a Hollywood film starring Shailene Woodley as Tris, with films of Insurgent and Allegiant following the next two years.
We recommend this book to YA fans from 11/12 upwards due to some adult themes and graphic battle scenes. You’ll need to read the trilogy in order, but once you start with book 1 Divergent, we promise you will not be able to put it down.
All the Divergent books in order:
Book 1: Divergent (2011)
Book 2: Insurgent (2012)
Book 3: Allegiant (2013)
Short Stories: Four: A Divergent Collection (2014)
