For a YA fantasy and at times romantasy read that empowers, surprises and bedazzles its readers, we highly recommend the Daughter of the Pirate King duology.
The books follow seventeen-year-old Alosa, daughter of the feared Pirate King, as she cunningly tries to retrieve an ancient hidden map, the key to a legendary treasure trove, and ultimately uses it to find the coveted treasure. In the process of her mission, she encounters the unexpectedly clever and unfairly attractive first mate of a rival pirate ship, Riden, so the books do have romance, although we should warn this is a slow burn. The series is packed full of adventure, longing, family secrets and girl power.
