For a YA fantasy and at times romantasy read that empowers, surprises and bedazzles its readers, we highly recommend the Daughter of the Pirate King duology.

The books follow seventeen-year-old Alosa, daughter of the feared Pirate King, as she cunningly tries to retrieve an ancient hidden map, the key to a legendary treasure trove, and ultimately uses it to find the coveted treasure. In the process of her mission, she encounters the unexpectedly clever and unfairly attractive first mate of a rival pirate ship, Riden, so the books do have romance, although we should warn this is a slow burn. The series is packed full of adventure, longing, family secrets and girl power. 

We recommend this to anyone who loves The Pirates of the Caribbean, as well as Red Queen and the Letters of Enchantment books. For more series like this, do be sure to check out the following blog posts:
