The Demon Headmaster by Gillian Cross is an addictive series for readers 8+, which many consider a modern classic. Almost forty years after the publication of the first book, the fun and frightening school adventures remain as popular as ever and have been made into several successful TV series.
The original 1996 TV adaptation, starring Terrence Hardiman as the headmaster and Frances Amey as Dinah, was based on the first three books in the series. A TV sequel was made in 2019 for CBBC, based on Total Control and the subsequent books, which picks up where the original series left of. The Demon Headmaster series 2 is in the pipeline, although filming was delayed due to Covid.
The first book follows the adventures of Dinah as she joins a new school where the headmaster is extremely creepy and the children weirdly well-behaved. As she settles in, Dinah finds herself saying and doing things she can’t control and seeks to uncover the secret to the headmaster’s influence with the help of her SPLAT (Society for the Protection of Our Lives Against Them) team. As the kids fight the Demon Headmaster’s hypnotic power, they realise he won’t stop at controlling the school - he wants to take over the whole nation!
There are now eight books in Gillian Cross’ The Demon Headmaster series. Although the books could be read out of order, we recommend starting with book one The Demon Headmaster to get the back story.
