The Wood Where Magic Grows is such a fantastic, imaginative chapter book series for budding fantasy readers aged 7+ we personally love to recommend. It's written by Andy Shepherd and is packed with black-and-white illustrations throughout by the fantastic Ellie Snowdon.
When Iggy discovers overgrown Wildtop Wood at the end of his new garden, he couldn't be more excited. A whole new world opens up for him and his brother Cal: high in the treetops, a world of tangled greenery and unexpected adventure. But as Iggy and Cal venture further into the trees, they hear whispers of a fading green magic, and scampering animals seem to be leading them to a secret deep at the heart of the wood. And they must dig deep into their imaginations to find a way to help the wood.
There's lots to love about this series: themes of blended families, a love for nature and an inclusive cast of characters: Mae, for example, is deaf and communicates using sign language. Iggy and Cal are stepbrothers.
Andy Shepherd is the bestselling author of the chapter book series The Boy Who Grew Dragons books, which we also love so very much!
This is a fantastic read if you're growing a young nature lover, and is the best read if your child is not quite ready for Greenwild. If you loved this series and want to find more like this, do check out our blog post on the Best Magical Series for 7 and 8 year olds.
