I read it to Kikki aged 5 aged 5

Soft, sweet, special.
Kikki age 5: "It was all cute and nice, I really liked it. Panda really wanted to sail on the real sea and Baby Weasus didn't give it up and was a good friend to Panda. It was fun. It is really cool, we are going to make our own paper boats. I can turn it into a hat too!"
A simple but effective (they've actually done this no frills book well) seventies feel with the photo illustrations, calm and peaceful snuggle-up story, with a good message about 'living the dream' and friendship. Very sweet book, with an activity illustrated in detail so very hard to mess it up! Story and activity always a good daytime combination for something to do together again and again.

This is such a sweet book. Panda dreams of taking a boat out into the sea but is convinced it will never happen. Thanks to some help from his friends, Panda is able to go for a trip on a paper boat. The photo illustrations are perfect for the tone of the story. I love how all the characters appear to be needle felted. It was obviously a labor of love that adds an air of nature to the story.
After the story, there is a section showing how to make a paper boat. I've not tried it with my daughter yet, but it looks relatively easy to follow. I'm looking forward to giving it a go with her.

A very sweet book with a story of friendship and love between various cute teddies. This was followed by step by step instructions on how to make an origami folded paper boat. We are now overrun with slightly wonky boats as my daughter 5 keeps trying to make them herself!  The book is a handy small size and hardback, which is great for sticking in a bag for entertainment on a day of travelling, etc.

My daughter (age 6) thoroughly enjoyed this book. She especially liked the photograph pictures as opposed to drawn illustrations as she felt it made the Panda more lifelike. It carries a lovely message throughout the story, highlighting how good it is to be nice to our friends. Furthermore, it encourages imaginative play such as riding the waves of the blue rug.
An added bonus is the illustrated instructions at the end of the book showing you how to make the boat that Panda sailed in. My little girl was greatly entertained by the characters in the story, appearing in the pictures, as photo's, demonstrating how to build the boat.
This is a lovely book throughout, we definitely recommend - thank you Toppsta and Celestine.

Beautiful hardbacked  book with high quality paper. I was really impressed with the design of this book.  My little girl really enjoyed the lovely story and the pictures are so cute and quaint. At the back of the book it gives you step by step instructions on how to make the paper boat from the story- which my daughter and I loved doing together. I would definitely recommend this book.

This was a great book. It is a lovely size for little hands to hold. The use of real life toys, rather than drawings really seemed to appeal to my boys.
Panda has a dream of sailing on the real sea, not just on the kitchen rug and his friend helps him to make this happen. I did have to explain to my youngest son about the difference between happy tears and sad tears as he was very disappointed that Panda was crying when his dream came true!
At the end of the book there are very clear instructions as to how you can make your own paper boat. We did this and then sailed them in the bath before bedtime. A great book where the whole family can join in.

This book is really charming - a simple tale of friendship really and the building of a paper boat for Panda to make his dreams come true.  The photos throughout are so charming and it has a real feel of Bagpuss about it, for all those old enough to remember.  I love the photos at the front introducing "the tribe" - it really makes you want to be part of their world.  Lucas loved following the instructions to make the paper boat at the end of the book - this amused us for a good couple of hours on a chilled out day in the school holidays!

This is a very appealing book both in terms of content and appearance. The book itself is quite small, just under A5 size with a pretty hard back cover. The story is sweet and original. The images make the book stand out. I've not come across a book quite like it before. The story is based on a toy panda so the images are based on photos of the toy panda enjoying aspects of his adventure. The story is dreamlike and positive. Another unique aspect of the book is the step by step pictures of craft activities at the back.. so every reader can recreate their own version of the tale!

My three year old twin girls really enjoyed this book and we had great fun making a paper boat together following the instructions at the end of the book. A beautifully illustrated book, if that's the right word as it has photographs throughout. A charming little story of one toy Panda's big dream and how his best friend made it possible for him. Very sweet tale with a lovely activity at the end,

The book is a lovely size for little hands to hold and thanks to the instructions at the end we have done quite a few paper boats since receiving the book which I think was the best part of the whole book. The story is cute but as it was, it didn't really intrigue either of our older boys (4 & 5) but our 2 year old is fascinated by the little panda. It's a cute story and that's about it.

For me, this book missed the mark a bit. I found the writing style to be a little pretentious, self congratulatory and self-aware. The plot is very thin, seemingly aimed at smaller children, but the accompanying illustrations are heavily stylised, making it hard to engage a wriggling tot. To that end. I'm not sure who it's aimed at, other than the sort of parent who might accidentally leave out next to the Baby Einstein CD to impress visitors. It's so middle class you can almost hear the author imploring their little ones to eat up their aduki beans and shittake mushrooms. It would have been just the one star if it weren't for the mildly engaging "Make a paper boat" section at the end.
