The first in Jeff Kinney's side-splitting series, join Greg Heffley as he's thrust into a new year, and a new school, where undersize weaklings share the corridors with kids who are taller, meaner and already shaving. I'll be famous one day, but for now I'm stuck in middle school with a bunch of morons. Desperate to prove his new found maturity, which only going up a grade can bring, Greg is happy to have his not-quite-so-cool sidekick, Rowley, along for the ride. But when Rowley's star starts to rise, Greg tries to use his best friend's popularity to his own advantage. Recorded in his diary with comic pictures and his very own words, this test of Greg and Rowley's friendship unfolds with hilarious results. Laugh until you cry at all of Greg's hopeless shenanigans. Diary of a Wimpy Kid has got millions of kids reading and laughing at (but mostly with) the famous Greg Heffley. If you're on the lookout for a funny children's book for 7+, especially a book for reluctant readers, you can't go wrong with the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series.
Praise for Jeff Kinney: 'The world has gone crazy for Jeff Kinney's Diary of a Wimpy Kid' - The Sun 'Kinney is right up there with J K Rowling as one of the bestselling children's authors on the planet' - Independent 'The most hotly anticipated children's book of the year is here - Diary of a Wimpy Kid' - Big Issue 'Hilarious' - Telegraph

This book gripped my 6 (now 7) year old from the minute he started reading it. He was given the first five books in the series and devoured them in no time and, on receiving the following five books this Christmas, finished the series in just a few days. He has since started to read them again!
The Wimpy Kid books were read after Tom Gates, which he also loves, and seem to be a similar style. Highly recommended to engage reluctant readers.

Tried and failed to get this book for my son on Toppsta giveaway but decided on it as extra Christmas gift..... so pleased I did as my son absolutely loved this book and it was read in two days!! Unlike many books this appears to be the norm for this author and the great characters in the book.i think my son can really buy into the main character and struggles with school.

I found this book really funny because of how it ended with the cheese. This book has sketches in it like they are from Greg’s diary. Some of the characters are really funny, Fregley is a bit weird, he does gross things. I would recommend this book to my friends.

The Diary of a Wimpy kid books are really good. I've watched the film, but prefer the book. The story revolves about a young boy called Greg, and how his life is seriously messed up. A book suitable for anyone of any age.

My son excels at reading, but up until Wimpy Kid we hadn't found a series that had hgim absolutely devouring a book within hours. The Diary of the Wimpy kid did this for my son, he is obsessed with the series now and read everything by Jeff Kinney in under two weeks. He pretty much devoured a book every day, or sometimes within a few hours.
I asked him what he liked so much about the Wimpy Kid series and his reply was that they were really great stories - and funny. He liked that they made him laugh a lot. His favourite character is Manny, as he always does silly things and is a little like his younger brother.
While I knew the books were popular, I don't know why it took me so long to offer them to my son. They have launched his free reading and given him a real appetite for books and reading.
He is 7, so I recommend for this age and above.

This is a very good book, firstly i like it because it's very funny- i mean the whole 'cheese touch' theme is brilliant! Jeff Kinney brings the funny right from the get go by stating in no uncertain terms that Greg's diary is in fact not a diary at all- it is a journal!! It is very important that we take that on board.
Secondly pairing the doodles with Greg's goings on is genius, they're equally as funny as the story and really add a personal touch to what's going on inside Greg's 'head'.
I literally couldn't put it down, i read it from cover to cover- only stopping to laugh my socks off!

Lol at this book. It is so funny about the cheese touch and all the other mayhem going on in Greg Heffley's life. With 2 annoying brothers a Mum that persuades him not to play video games all his life and a father that hardly seems happy life just can't get better for him.

Without these books, I wouldn't be a reader! I didn't like reading much, until my mum gave me Diary of a Wimpy Kid to try. It was easy to read, has great illustrations and is REALLY funny. After I had read all of the Wimpy Kid books , I moved into trickier books and now I love reading.

I love this book, I have read it a few times and watched the film lots too.  Greg is funny but he is a bad friend to Rowley, I wouldn't want him as my best friend.
The best bit is when Greg looks after Rowley by telling everyone he ate the cheese.  It was good that he took the credit even though it made him really unpopular, I think he finally realised friendship was more important.
Every kid should read this book, boy or girl.

This is the first book of the series and I thought it was great. Greg, the main character is so funny, the things he gets up make you laugh out loud and fall about its so funny. It is written like a real diary, small paragraphs and really funny pictures. You really want to know what happens to Greg so I am reading the whole series

I thought it was very funny. I liked the illustrations, they looked quite easy to draw, some were hilarious. (Greg's little brother looks a bit strange, but funny at the same time.) I thought it was funny when Greg (wimpy kid) and Rowley (his friend) go trick and treating at Halloween and they get chased by a gang of teenagers. Greg can be a bit horrible to Rowley at times. It does end well. I would recommend this to people who liked The Treehouse Story books.

I found it tough to get past what a horrible person Greg was, very selfish most of the way through the book. He makes Horrid Henry look like a well behaved kid. I didn't really like the writing style either, it reminded me of Pop idol and Britain's got talent, it has that same level of bullying which makes it acceptable to laugh at somebody who either isn't the normal, looks funny or is mildly delusional.

One thing I noticed whilst reading this to my daughter was that she laughed hardest when things go against Greg. She seemed to enjoy it so it gets 2 stars.

Bad news is she now wants to start book 2.
