The Danny Sharp series Time and Again is a fast-paced adventure story with engaging characters set in the Late Iron Age (realistically portrayed) and the modern day, with a sprinkling of sci-fi to link them. The differences and similarities between the two ages are manifest, but the characters and the changes in their lives dominate this fast-moving series.
The tensions of the past are finally left behind. As they all return to the present. Danny's father is still missing presumed dead, and his mother seriously injured, but Danny realises with a pang that he has a family he never knew about in the past, and that he and Tasgo have developed a strong bond.
In the present, they try to hide the existence of a time portal, as police investigate the explosion and the sudden disappearances. D I Raynes is under investigation, and Danny's mother is still undergoing treatment for her injuries. Danny discovers that he and modern life are no longer suited. On the day of his mother's big operation, anxious, Danny skips school and goes back into the past for the day.
All battles over, Seahome, full of peaceful activity, seems so much more meaningful than dreary classes, and he has time to ask Brec to mend the device that Kuillok dropped when he was caught. Danny's fear for his mother, however, forces him back to the modern, where she is safely recovering.
Danny's thoughts about the past clash with Kelly's. She sees the clashes as teenage boys and young men in competing gangs, while he sees the life as rich and rewarding, the young men brave in their protection of the village and of his mother. They both know that, disturbingly, they were part of it, that each of them participated in the violence, and took a life to save another. A secret they find hard to admit, even to themselves. It has changed them both, and created a bond between them.
Despite everyone's warnings, Danny goes back into the past, into the daily life, into the joyous feasts and songs of Beltane, with the buying and selling of beasts, and the bidding war that gives Brec two new slaves. Once more the dangerous tangle of intrigue and rivalry of young men results in conflict.
Danny's deliverance by a stranger leaves him chastened, but given the choice, he realises, he prefers action, life and adventure here to the dull inaction of the modern. He thinks he can handle it now.
