Ellie has just moved to a new town in Scotland during the summer holidays with her dad, who takes on a job as caretaker at Aboyne Academy. They left their old address in Edinburgh, to escape something which still gives Ellie nightmares. Ellie's mother died when she was two and it upsets her that her dad never speaks about her. She gets a Facebook friend request from a mysterious girl called Harriet, who she later discovers has been dead for a month. She comes face to face with her.
