Science affects, in a multitude of ways, the life of almost every person on earth. From medicine to nutrition to communication to transportation, the products of scientific research have changed human life. These changes have mostly taken place in the last two centuries, so rapidly that the average person is unable to keep informed. A consequence of this "information gap" has been the increasing suspicion of science and scientists. The lack of true understanding of science, especially of "fundamental" research, has motived the authors to write a short and approachable description of science and the people who do it.
Key Features 1) The book will fill an existing void in understand of science among the general population 2) Written in a non-technical language to facilitate understanding 3) Covers wide range of science-related subjects, including the value to society of the so-called "basic research", a description of how scientists work, how they share results and ideas, and how science is funded by governments and private entities. 4) Importantly, the book addresses the possible dangers of research and how society deals with such dangers. 5) The book presents the viewpoint of two authors who have in sum spent nearly a century working in laboratories all over the world and have taught numerous college courses. They have authored or edited numerous science books, including monographs, textbooks, and popular science books.
