The most extraordinary picture book! We love it. Beautiful illustrations and a super story. The children loved the flaps and the super factual information interspersed throughout. I loved the 'ooh' sounds the children made throughout. Just an absolute joy of a book.

A very interesting book with a mixture of fiction and non-fiction with lots of lift-the-flaps. A boy hears a sound out of his window at midnight and he sees a mammoth! Then they both go looking for his little brother mammoth in a museum. There's a lot to talk about on every page, in each of the sections of the museum there are also lots of curious information about sea-animals, dinosaurs, aviation.

I was getting a bit lost initially because we were trying to read all the text in each page in one go, but I think this book is actually more than one story, if you choose the fiction story, then I would avoid the non-fiction part, and then read it again and then focus on the non-fiction sections, then the book is amazing. My son giggled so much, lifting the flap and noticing the paintings changing, as if they were in movement. I think my son will get more and more from this book while he grows older, because some of the information is still a bit advanced for him.

I liked the story as it featured lots of facts as well as the story for me to read. The flaps were really good than just a normal book and I liked the pictures in the book as well as some of the jokes that were included. The book took longer to read as there was more writing than I thought.

This is a great lift the flap book about a little boy and a woolly mammoth chasing down a baby mammoth through the museum. They go past the animals, the aquarium, the aviation section and through the library to name a few.

With a nearly 3 year old I found it easier to just focus on the actual story and letting her look behind all the flaps. There's a lot of little facts and jokes hidden in the book which I think she'll enjoy as she gets older. With every read we find something new to look at on the pages as they are totally jam packed. My little ones particular favourite is a turtle that says 'shut that door' when you open the flap - kept her amused for at least 20 minutes! This is a beautiful well made book that offers more and more and would be an investment to any child's bookcase.

Really beautiful illustrations. My boys love dinosaurs so this is great for them. Lots of flaps to lift and interesting facts about dinosaurs. Perhaps a bit wordy at times for my younger son.

My daughter loves this book. The story is kind of similar to the night at the museum where all the exhibitions come to life. It's a very sweet and funny story about a Monmouth searching for his baby brother and makes a friend along the way.

We love the little facts that are in the book although I find they distract from the story. So we don't always read them all.

Beautiful illustrations and it's been enjoyed 3 times so far

The lift the flap parts kept my
Toddler well entertained - the illustrations and a little dark and the book is very busy - but my little one seemed to really enjoy it

The Curious Case of the Missing Mammoth

This is a gorgeous and uniquely constructed book, but I wasn't completely satisfied with the story. I adore the illustrations from Karl James Mountford, which are light hearted and engaging for young readers, but filled with lots of details for adults to enjoy (I loved George Orwell's Typewriter in the museum, for example). In the story, Oscar is woken by strange stomping noises in the street, which turn out to be the footsteps of not one, but two, mammoths!  The little mammoth has lost his teddy and together they go on an adventure through the museum to find it, helped by all the exhibits who have woken up because it is midnight - magic hour!

Alongside the story there are lots of flaps to lift, and under the flaps there are lots of facts about the different things they find in the museum.  I struggled to decide how to present these facts to the children in my class - lifting the flap also reveals an illustration which advances the story, so it seemed an odd time to start a discussion about whales, for example. The facts are interesting and in keeping with the museum setting but I found they distracted from the action.  I also felt that the whole 'magic hour' concept wasn't that clearly presented - rather than being set up at the beginning of the story, when we first see the mammoths, it is only mentioned after we enter the museum.  I wish this concept had been presented more clearly to help the younger children in my class to understand exactly what was happening!

My class will be revisiting this book, and I think that it will benefit from multiple readings, but although it is beautifully produced I'm not sure if it will become one of our favourites.
