After six months as an evacuee in wartime Ilfracombe, John Lea has already made many friends and has grown to love the town. He is proud to be one of Ilfracombe's Vackies, as the evacuees are known locally. He learns to swim in the local seawater swimming pool and has dreams of visiting Lundy, an island visible from the town. His thirst for adventure has already led him into trouble, but now his mother is beginning to wonder if he and his sister, Grace, wouldn't be safer at home in Blitz-stricken London.
