This book was gripping - I can't wait to read the next one. Great characters and all with lots going on in their lives.  I loved the links back to the Pied Piper, this prior knowledge made you feel part of the story very quickly Loved the prophecy too. This book had lots of 'Oh!' moments. Fantastic. Love the descriptions.

I loved this book that much that it was extremely hard to fault anything about it. I finished the book two days ago and over the course of the last two days found nothing I could even nit-pick on. A Darkness of Dragon’s was wonderful! I need more!

This is a brilliant fantasy booked based around the story of the Pied Piper Of Hamelin. The characters are really well described, Barver is my favourite character, he is really funny, yet managed to never did even though he is in situations where he should! The story is full of adventure to try and stop the evil Piper, easy to read as you really get into the story!

A perfect fantasy adventure story. This book is a really unusual take on the classic story The Pied Piper of Hamelyn. Throw in magic, battles and shape shifting and you have this easy to follow, beauty of a book. Addies favourite character was Wren and she also loved the bad guy The Hamelyn Piper. We felt this book had a real Tolkein feel to it, like all great adventures should. This book is bound to be a great success

This is really good. It is a kind of twist on the traditional Pied Piper tale with dragons and magic and musical spells . It is exciting and I couldn't put it down. I give this adventure five stars

Three unexpected heroes, two sides, one epic adventure.
I really enjoyed reading this book. With lots of suspense, you can’t put it down from the start. The book is an adventure filled with surprises, loyalty and 3 very accidentally heroes. Patch (a disgraced piper), Wren (a girl cursed to live as a rat) and Barver (a dracogriff) know a secret that could mean the end of their world and it’s up to them to save everybody. It is captivating and it is the perfect book for people that love adventure books. It makes you feel like you are there with the characters. I particularly like the character Wren because she is a risk-taker and a loyal friend. I would rate this book 10/10 and I would recommend it particularly to children aged 11+.

I've read this in preparation for use with a Year 5 class and enjoyed it thoroughly. I will also read with/ lend to my son (Year 4) when we've finished it. I would say best suited to 8-13 year olds depending on reading level and interests. This book was inspired by The Pied Piper of Hamelin, and provides an excellent twist to this tale. I love the adventurous nature of this book and the language used to create the scenes is just brilliant. There is done interesting language within the book which provides opportunities for great discussions, as well as enhancing vocabularies. Such an imaginative story which you really can get lost within. I didn't want to put it down, such a gripping book.  I don't want to give away too much about the plot and spoil it but I definitely recommend giving it a go!

This book is about a boy called Patch Brightwater, a former piper who has ran away in disgrace. I liked it because it made me say " ohhh" a lot because it had lots of twists and surprises. Patch found two friends; Wren, A girl cursed to live as a rat, and Barver, A dracogriff (half dragon, half griffin). I like Wren's sneaky character, Barver's kinda funny character and Patch's brave character. This book is full of adventure, mystery and fantasy as it is set in a magical world. A kind of sequel to The Pied Piper of Hamelyn, I recommend this book to brave readers of 8+. There is no illustrations, although it has silhouettes of rats in the first part (before the story). I can't wait for the next book to come out in 2019.

This is a brilliant fantasy adventure story to introduce children to the genre.  It mixes mythical creatures, magic with a well known fairytale that creates a really interesting story with lots of twists and turns along the way.  Brilliant for children who like Harry Potter or the Hobbit.  We can't wait for the next instalment to come out.

This book had me gripped from start to finish. The story has a magical and exciting vibe with the author hooking you in so that you can't wait for what's coming next. Following the main character Patch, a disgraced Piper and his friend Wren, a rat, who together seek to find the truth about the Piper of Hamelyn. Will definitely look out for more offerings from S. A Patrick. I will also use this book as a class read in upper key stage 2.

This is both a beautifully written and very engaging fantasy tale.  It has all the elements needed to capture the imagination of today’s children:  magic, dragons, spells, fantasy world and delightful characters.  It is has adventure and excitement in spades and will, I am sure, engage even the most reluctant readers.  I intend to use it with my dyslexic students as an incentive to encourage them to enjoy reading for pleasure and escapism.    I am already looking forward to the sequel.

This is a retelling of the Pied Piper of Hamlin and I do enjoy a good retelling and this is definitely a good one! Patch is kind of an antihero which I also love! The characters are all very likable and it is gripping from the start, it's a good story and I think will appeal to Potter fans, Hiccup fans and also people like myself who like fairytales turned on their heads.
