'Like a mini-Miss Marple meets Maynards… this mouthful of mystery will leave every reader feeling like a child in a sweetshop; just craving to read more from Lavie!’

A town knee-deep in a confectionary chaos, a missing teddy bear and an unsolved case that throws up more questions than answers… why wouldn’t you want to read this?

In Lavie’s first foray into writing for children, he thrusts the reader (especially for those younger readers) in to the middle of what will seem like the utter unimaginable; a city where chocolate and sweets are forbidden under a prohibition act, with sugar gangs roaming the streets and corrupt candy cops round every corner.

However, fear not for super-sleuth and private-eye Nelle Faulkner – committed to always doing the right thing – to step up and take on what develops as the most intriguing of cases… As she investigates several people in *confection* with the previously-mentioned stolen teddy bear, the case goes from what seems like returning a missing cuddly toy to its rightful owner to an assortment of antics and more than the odd spot of confectionary capers (‘bootlegging, extortion, corruption, wilful destruction of property, intimidation and attempted murder’) that you can’t help but feel like you have to bite into.

Roles often reverse as grownups start acting like children and children act more like grownups in this original, highly-enjoyable and tempting twist on what happens when the town suffers from the symptoms of sugar withdrawal.

I really liked this book although I wouldn’t want to live in a place where all candy and sweet treats were banned! It is a fun mystery book and I really liked the character of Nelle as she is not your usual kind of detective. I also liked the pictures in this book and thought that they really helped to bring the story to life.

This book was so much fun for me to read. I really liked the main character, Nelle and I would love to be a detective like her too but I wouldn't want to live in world without sweets. I felt like I was being taken along on her mystery as she solved it and I think her friends are fun. I liked the pictures in the book too.

My daughter read this to herself. She really liked the main character Nelle. All about sweet things being banned. Nelle is the detective. Great story and would recommend it.

This book is about a girl named Nelle. She solves crimes. One of my favourate characters was Webber. He was funny. In one part, he tripped on some marbles and I could really imagine being there.

This book was exciting and a bit creepy in parts. It was very funny in places. I liked the ending.

This is a fun tale based in a town where candy (sweets, biscuits, chocolate, ice cream) has been banned - supposedly for the health of the children.
A healthy trade in bootleg candy exists though - and it seems there's a turf war erupting between some of the (12 year old) candy barons.
Belle is a private eye who is hired to find a missing teddy bear - however there's more to this case than meets the eye, when she uncovers the real owner of the bear.
It's a fun romp (reminded me a bit of Scooby Doo) with some cartoon villains, kid sized heroes and a person who is not what they seem.
Peppered with fab illustrations (that reminded me very much of Quentin Blake's style), Candy is a good old fashioned mystery which happily takes it's time and doesn't feel the need to rush.

If you're a fan of detective novels, both old and new, then you'll enjoy Candy. Nelle is a fantastic character, her style is 'classic detective with lines like 'He looked as wrong as caramel popcorn, and that's about as wrong as you can get.' The villains are larger than life and there are so many twists and turns to keep the reader interested. We especially liked the character profiles at the back and the map at the front- it really helped us to put the pieces together!

In a city where candy is a crime and biscuits have been banned Nelle Faulker is on the case for sweet smugglerlers and candy crooks.

I absolutely loved this book! All of my friends were desperate to read it. I especially loved the illustrations, they looked a lot like the ones you'd get in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
At the start of each chapter there is a little picture that gives you a clue about whats going to happen and each chapter is very unexpected!
I would totally recommend this book to all ages!!

I read this book with my two children over a few nights. It was a great plot and we really liked all the different characters, especially Nelly. I particularly liked the descriptive text, comparing and describing things to sweet treats.
I think it made the children think about the amount of sugar available around them and what it would be like if they were made illegal. We had a great discussion about healthier treat options.
All in all a great detective story. My 12 year old thought it was a little young for her and admitted she probably would have lost interest if reading it herself.

It was a nice fun mystery book to read, I still can’t understand how anyone could live in a world with no sweets and chocolate, so really pleased it’s not real, Nelle is a really fun character, and the pictures really make the book, I really enjoyed the book but it’s not the normal book I would go for, will be passing this one on to friends thank you toppsta
