The winner of the 2014 Association of Illustrators' Award for Children's Books, Shh! is the covetable new picture book from Chris Haughton, one of the most exciting new voices in children's literature.

From Chris Haughton, the multi award-winning author-illustrator of A Bit Lost and Oh No, George!, comes a picture book about a beautiful bird, four friends and plans gone wrong... The friends are out for a walk. Suddenly, they spot it - a beautiful bird perched high in a tree! They simply must have it and - shh!- they have a plan. So they tip-toe very slowly, nets poised - "Ready one ... ready two ... ready three ... GO!" But, at the turn of the page, we find a ridiculous bunch of very tangled characters and a blissfully oblivious bird, flying away. One hilarious foiled plan after another and it's clear that this goofy gang cannot catch that elusive birdie! But the littlest of this group, a quiet spectator up until now, knows that a bit of kindness can go a long way... Will his friends follow his gentle lead or will they get themselves into even more trouble?

Four friends are out for a walk. Three of them have nets and are determined to catch a beautiful red bird. The littlest one is much kinder and wants to say hello to the bird but the other three keep telling him to ssh! Because they have a plan.

This is a really great book. It is a very simple story with not many words but I find that this gives us more opportunity to chat about what is happening in the story and what might happen next. My four year old twins also find the ending laugh out loud hilarious! Very highly recommended.

Fantastic book! My kids love it! Bold mono colour illustrations and simple repetitive text help build the suspension up and keep the kids engaged. The story is easy to follow and ends fantastically. I'd recommend this book to all ages, my two are 2 and 6 and both enjoyed it

Brilliant book- simple design, clever plot, well written, lots of fun repetition she can join in with- my daughter loves me to read this story- especially the 'Ready one, ready two, ready three.....' part. We say this when moving her around, getting her dressed and putting her in her pushchair and car seat...she finds it hilarious.  A must book for sharing and reading aloud.

Four friends are out walking in the woods. Three are equipped with nets. They spot a bird. The youngest of the four waves and calls out a friendly hello, but he is immediately silenced by the others who have a plan. A plan to catch the bird. However, despite their best efforts, each attempt ends in failure with the bird escaping and the friends in a heap on the floor.

There's a lovely contrast between the elder three's sneaky scheming and the gentle kindness of the youngest. He hangs back, while the others are creeping up on the bird, and watches their efforts with concern and incredulity. He too wants to get close to the bird but his motivation is different - friendship. He offers the bird some bread and soon - in a glorious, vibrant double page spread - he is surrounded by the bird and his bird friends.

I love Chris Haughton's distinctive illustrative style. The pictures are bold and unfussy with clean lines. He has used a gorgeous blue and purple colour palette which gives the book the feel of early evening. The bright pink bird is a tantalising splash of colour on each page.

The text is sparse and very simple with lots of repetition; Shh We Have a Plan is the perfect story to read aloud.

Our 3 year old loves this book.  Wants it several times a day.  Simple concept, lovely pictures, few words.  Child quickly learnt words and enjoyed telling us the story.  Nice discussion point for young child re what the child wants vs the adults

This is a brilliantly simple story with gorgeously bright illustrations. The story tells the tale of three hunters and their quest to catch a bird. We see them try and fail over the course of the book to catch the bird. The ending is just delightful and always makes us laugh. Although it's really simple, it's definitely a story that can be enjoyed by children of any age.
