Ok so this on the face of it looks like a very simple book, limited words, fantastic drawings and great imagination to boot!  My son shouts at Sam and Dave when they are so blatantly missing the point and more importantly the treasure, but is there a bigger message that may be missed?  What is so very different at the end from the beginning?  What does it all mean?  Really lovely book which is great fun for both children and adults.

This excellent pairing have created a fantastically humorous and hilariously frustrating picture book that made both me and my Grandchildren amused. The small details in this book are very clever too. Keep an eye on the dogs facial expressions he is just as much a main character in this book as the eponymous pair. Can't recommend this enough!

A simple and charming tale of two friends who decide to dig a hole to look for treasure. They are accompanied by their very intelligent dog who can tell where the treasure is, but alas can not communicate it to them where it is! Will the boys find the treasure?, Or will they discover something even note precious? My son love this story with its understated pictures.

This is a great book. It's a witty story about two friends that work together to find buried treasure - but just when they are about to strike gold, the change direction in their digging - much to their intelligent canine friends frustration!
Each time they are about to discover treasure, it's bigger and better that the treasure before - but alas - they end their journey without discovering such riches!
Simple but engaging illustration and much to talk about with your children. Love this book!

Wonderful!! Simple, and yet so pleasing! The text is perfect, just enough to guide the story, and by being perfectly illustrated by Jon Klassen we are able to understand the story so much more. Even my 4 and 7 years olds 'got' the humour and noticed the ending without being told.

I don't want to spoil it, because I think it should be read to be enjoyed fully. The characters - Sam and Dave, are on a mission to find something spectacular, so they dig!

Very clever, and a must read!

This is a brilliant book- my daughter swung between extreme excitement and frustration at the adventure of Sam and Dave! It was great for discussing what she thought they should be doing. The pictures are great, we really enjoyed looking at all the possible treasure you might find- she now wants to dig up the garden :)

Lovely illustrations and a great slow paced book perfect for bedtime. Not many words but me and my 3 year old like to talk about each picture and how Sam and Dave keep missing the treasure. We quite like chocolate milk and animal biscuits too :)

Interesting story with a lovely message about working together and persevering with what you've started, also about noticing that a treasure doesn't always have to be an actual treasure. Not many words in this one but creates conversation with your child

My daughter loves this book, which I was a bit surprised by as she's normally into all things pink and princessy. It's a brilliant, deadpan tale of Sam and Dave as they dig a hole. There isn't much action but the drawings are beautiful and it is simple and engaging in its simplicity.
